Magic: Skyrim v. Oblivion
Im playing through Oblivion now and chose to play as magic specialist(swords and melee combat is boring). Also I liked plasmids in Bioshock thought this game would be fun with magic similar to that throwing fire shocking freezing, etc. However it seems magic is not a focus of the game it's not that viable and fun to play. I hear Skyrim magic is useful and fun and saw some videos where they work more like Bioshock plasmids as actual dependable gameplay options. Would I enjoy playing magic in Skyrim?

im a noob at this 100hr and lvl37 high elf, once i hit lvl32 i used destruction magic and heavy armor (ebony) or one handed weapons methune razor ebony sword of burning staff of chain lightning and i have finished civil war and killed aldiun with no problems
magic by far in terms of damage in skyrim is very weak compared what you can do with crossbow as a thief char. That thing is so powerful damage wise it like one shots anything even on hardest setting well after you upgrade it to the max you can with smithing enchanting and alchmeny and being a vampire. If you want to be magic user in skyrim do not use the damage spells they are just weak. Use illusion and get the badies kill each other you may need to summon a few mobs to kill the ones that didnt die.
Magic in skyrim is nowhere near as fun as in previous elder scroll games. There are barely any spells, and the few that are there are basically just upgrades from previous ones.
Magic is in fact a viable option in Skyrim. I am currently playing through using absolutely no weapons; bound or not. The only thing I am having a little trouble with is during quests that you have allies I sometimes accidentally hit an ally.
On my curent character Conjuration is my second highest skill, behind Archery. I've been summoning bound weapons and/or atronachs for most fights. I miss custom spells. I miss massive destruction spell like Lightning Storm and Toxic Cloud
Try a mod like Apocalypse spell package. It adds a ton of new spells, with custom visual effects.
Thanks for the useful information
I've played pure mages in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skryim. I would say that Oblivion and Skyrim have roughly equivalent magic playability. Oblivion gives you more spells plus spell making, but Skyrim gives you better perks which makes the spells more effective. Thus it balances out.

The key to Skyrim magic is the perks. The Destruction spells are fairly weak, but if you use the perks they'll do decent damage and have nice effects and options. At first glance Illusion spells look like they'll only affect low level foes, but with the right perks you can affect every foe in the game except dragons (and a few bosses). Ditto for Alteration, Conjuration, and Restoration, with the perks they end up being fairly powerful. You'll never be able to one-shot a dragon with a fireball, but then again, you won't need to.
It would have been nice to have the spells that unlock chests and doors in Skyrim like they did in Oblivion. When playing a pure mage, the idea of busting out a lockpick to unlock something felt wrong.

There are mods. Vanilla magic is quite weak, but you can mod it on both Oblivion and Skyrim to be effective.

even a mage has some side skills though :) I pick locks and have some archery for when my magik gets low and needs to regen

Lol, with Skyrim a mage needs to have other options ;) Love the game, but i feel a bit like Akiro from Conan the Destroyer.

Conan: "Can't you wizard it open?"
Me: "Well...it's like this man.....No!"
Oblivion's spell creation system was brilliant, but incredibly broken if you exploited it. I really wish Bethesda would have implemented a similar system in Skyrim (thankfully modders took care of that for us. Sort of). Magic just feels... weak in Skyrim. Until you reach the later levels, you may as well be slapping your enemies than spraying fire at them. Once again, modders took care of that as well.

So to answer the question, Oblivion wins by far.

How is this any different from the muscle bound warrior with fingers too thick to even hold a lockpick?
I think magic is very over power in Skyrim. I don't see how and why people are saying it's weak. Enemies who are mages used to kill me with their fire blast and ice spikes like it was nothing.
The first spells are suppose to be not that strong. The later more powerful spells that you can learn (and use once you have enough magicka points in order to use the spell) are very OP if you ask me.
