Player Character Dialogue
Greetings, Folks!

Hmm. I've seen two friends play games, and they talk while they do so, and I wonder if they are doing so for my benefit. Because I only talk when I play, if my cat, or my dogs, are present. (Or if the friends are present, I talk to them.) I don't talk to the computer unless I'm angry with it. But anyway, those friends that talk, seem to be talking as their characters, though in ways that don't quite fit with the game world.

Since then, I've played "Oblivion" and "Skyrim" both, for many hours. But only just recently, did an NPC say something to my PC in such a way, that it had me wondering, just what did my PC say anyway. That in turn reminded me, that I've been meaning to ask others about it, so here I am.

For those of you that write journals about your gaming adventures, I can go read what you wrote, I reckon. But for those of you that don't write your adventures down like that, but you do still role-play these games, I was wondering, if you go so far as to make up dialogue as you play the games, to further increase your immersion. So, do you?

Also, has anyone else wondered what the unspoken, official dialogue is that your PC supposedly says, but you can't read it, let alone hear it? Is there a way to learn it, from some hidden source? Or are we left using our imaginations? Is there a mod for it?

Just curious. :-)

(At least back when I played "ZORK", I could reply. I miss messing with that game too.)

If you meant by unspoken dialogue in a way I understand it, which is the character says things outside of dialouge prompts (like when talking to the NPCs), no, there is no mod for it, at least so far as to comment on things around the character. I remember a mod that allowed me to get my character to say yes or no, but that was taken out of the game itself and applying the animation and sound to the character. Other than that, I have not seen a mod do what you had described. I also don't think that Bethesda would program lines of character dialogue outside of menus and never use them.

I remember that I read an article on Pokemon and why the protagonists are silent. The interviewee (can't remember who, could be one of the founders) had said that they want players to make up their own story as to what the characters say. So, it could very well be the same thing here.

I hadn't really talk aloud when playing the game, but I like to comment on situations inside my head. For example, being sadist when a boss dies in one hit.

Hello, ggg336! Thank you very much for being the very first to reply! :-) Hmm. I understand what you mean. Sometimes I feel like I must've dozed off for some microsleep when an NPC reacts to something my PC said, that I'm not aware of having said, though. I haven't really role-played any dialogue in my head for a game session. If something does come to mind, I quit the game, and use what I just thought of, for creative writing purposes. :-)

Glad that you could reply, but I did say that there is NO character interaction outside of dialgoues. The only time dialogue happens is when a NPC talks to you in the form of just passing by your you get near them. The character themselves don't say a single word. If you still want to hear your character speak out of context, check this mod: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/21215/?

I literally came across it when I was searching for the mod that voices almost all of the menu dialogue the character says. I still haven't found it though, I am actually not even sure whether it exists or has been pulled since I did not follow that mod. I am not even sure I did see the discription properly as to what voices it adds.

Interesting subject. I sometimes make it up, what BjarvnR says, in my head. But not always ofcourse.

When Ulfrid Stormcloak was about to be executed, and wanted me, the "dragonborn", to slay him I would have liked to add my own comment:
"You think I take great pleasure in killing my own people? You think I enjoyed this war with my own brethren? Whom I could have rebuild Skyrim with? Instead of fighting a meaningless war with?"
Then I would have dropped my sword and turned away from the scene.

Good Morning, ggg336! I know that you did! I was just informing you of how one can feel like one has missed dialogue and also, how it makes me feel, when I know that I wasn't too drowsy. But hey, thanks for that link! I'm downloading it now. I remember having the "Oblivion" version and how fun it was, while it lasted. :-) Good luck with your endeavors too, by the way.

Howdy, raptsaurus! Thanks for your reply! Hmm. I've only gotten that far once thus far. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction, so I let the General do it instead. But then, I didn't feel any satisfaction. I think I wasn't sure, because of all the dragon shout advice he had given to me, during a more neutral moment.

But anyway, I am an aspire writer, who is trying to get my own works as recognized as more than being "fan fiction", but more like, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?". But, just in case that doesn't work out for me, I also write what I hope are original stories. So, whenever what might pass for game dialogue from my character as I play, I instead have the urge to write it down as story material. Maybe if I was prone to talking out loud as my friends are, I wouldn't do that.
