Your companions wont die?
I was always curious why Faendal is still around while I am level 29 now. We've been through thick and thin and slain many a dragon and oftentimes I have noticed his health go dangerously low but never did he die on me.

Then I decided to run an experiment and let him fight a giant all by himself.

I realized when his health drops to like 10%, he collapses to one knee, and at that moment the enemy stops attacking him and pretends he isnt even there anymore.

Then 10 seconds later Faendal regains like 1% health and gets up and attacks the giant again, and the giant smacks him again till he drops to his knees. Rinse and repeat.

Now I know why the ****er is still alive. Sly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ had been cheating his way through many a combat, making all enemies swarm me as they shuffle past him once he plays deead.

Is there any mod that adds more realism to companions (i.e. make them die) without being one of those super complicated ones that do a ton of changes and have line 20 different .esp files for you to choose from and require SKSE?

Amazing Follower Tweaks. Only mod you need for your followers.

Yes, there are. Can't recall links off the top of my head though, so you got some searching in Workshop or Nexus (your preference) to do :)

You can also use console commands :)

AFT - nice one

that mod is a pile of poo.

It does nothing. I tested this by sending Rayya to fight a giant and GUESS WHAT?

As usual she dropped on her knees like the subserviant b*tch she is and the giant stopped attacking her and looked at me.

You have to configure each followers attributes.

I don't know if he is essential but this was listed as a bug on the UESPwiki: "Faendal is set to follow Camilla Valerius, which can lead to him being killed at the hands of bandits or vampires if Camilla is picked for radiant quests such as RescueDG or Rescue Mission from the Companions."

It is entirely possible that only you may finish poor Faendal in spite of AFT. You may test this by waiting until he submits and then loosing an arrow to his knee. If he keels over, get yourself another follower and check to make sure they suit your needs.

actually I can kill Faendal that way even without a mod

Yeah, I'm not sure there's any way to remove followers' protected status (protected = can only die if you hit them when their health is low, or sometimes from poison/bleeding damage/traps - as opposed to essential, where they can't die even then), mainly because I don't think most people want that, as they either view them as a companion who they don't want to die or (probably more frequently, in all honesty) as a pack mule, so they don't want to have to carry all that stuff back to town. Well, there's this but it's only got 30 endorsements and at least a couple of bugs in the comments (although, of course, those could be from something other than this mod, commenters aren't always that knowledgeable about how this stuff works).

Anyway, if he hadn't 'cheated', he wouldn't still be around to help you out/carry your stuff/whatever you have him around for. Also, I believe followers only have protected status when they are actively following you, so I imagine there are some interesting head-canons around this, essentially boiling down to 'being a companion of the Dragonborn lets you cheat death', similar to how some people's head-canon insists that CHIM is a valid in-universe reason for being able to reload a save if you die. (Afaik this isn't canon, per se, although some seem to insist it is.)

Well, given the sheer number of companions you can recruit in Skyrim, my problem is that I dont like telling one of my companions to go home so I tend to stick with him forever until they died...and sadly most of them dont have a unique story like in New Vegas so it makes Skyrim's companions a textbook example of quantity over quality.

As such, making them mortal would entice people to recruit new companions once their old ones die, and there still are more than enough followers left for 1 playthrough to almost always have a follower.

I suspect most people would go 'hmm, my followers keep dying, half the time it's my/their fault because they jumped in front of my sword for no good reason, so it's not worth having them carry stuff for me as I just end up carrying it, plus the vast majority of them I will outlevel at some point, sometimes relatively early in the game, most of them are terrible at sneaking and quite boring, I don't think I'll bother'. Players who roleplay rather than having everything be about efficiency/building the 'best' character would probably still use followers, but it would still be an added tick to the 'followers suck' column, given if you don't set them to essential you already have to babysit them a bit due to the aforementioned 'tendency towards suicidal bravado' character trait they all seem to share.

Or, they'd look for a way to set their followers to essential, if there were no protected option, I guess.

Have you tried modded followers? There are some pretty awesome ones with a lot more personality than the vanilla ones. I really like Vilja (though her personality may not suit everyone, she's quite a bubbly girl but occasionally gets moany and can be quite pushy) and Inigo, have also heard very good things about Arissa and Sonja, and Interesting NPCs adds several new followers, some of whom have quests and such.

maybe there should be a mod that makes them level up with you as well, or automatically adjust their level to yours (or maybe a bit lower) when you hire them for the first time

if he is still alive you should give him the best equipment that you can get a hold of to reward him
