Controllers not working?
I sucesfully paired my Windows MR controllers, but they don't show up in SteamVR. Only the headset shows up. Note that controllers also don't show up inside "Mixed Reality Portal" and I seen no troubleshooting options anywhere it regards to it.

Are there any instructions or steps that I'm missing in order to get controllers to work, or could it be they are not supported yet?

If the controllers aren't working in the portal, they won't work in Steam. Sometimes you need to open up settings in windows and go to devices to get the controllers to realize that they are there.

If you still have issues, reboot and don't turn both controllers on at the same time. I've heard that there are some BT controllers that get confused until you reboot when this happens. This is unfotunate, because turning on the controllers at the same time is what comes natural.

Thanks, I'll look into trying to make them work with the Mixed Reality Portal first. If anyone has any resources or further advice on troubleshooting this, do contribute, as software itself appears to be lacking in such options.

EagleShadow,
If you select the hamburger menu from the Mixed Reality Portal, the select '... see more' at the bottom, one of the options is 'setup controllers'. You pair them in the settings. There is a guide at https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/set_up_windows_mixed_reality that starts with the motion controller setup.

Hey guys, Microsoft employee here.

@Darax were you able to get your controllers paired and working in the Mixed Reality home / cliff house?

@ooGDoo are your controllers working correctly in the Mixed Reality home / cliff house? If so, are your controllers working in other games or is it just this one in particular?

As you can see from the screenshot, I don't have the option "... see more" when I select the hamburger menu in the Mixed Reality Portal.

When I click "Add device", "Bluetooth & other devices" opens up where I can see that bluetooth is on, and that under "Mouse, keyboard, & pen" category there are:
Motion controller - Left
Paired
Motion controller - Right
Paired

Yet I see no motion controllers in VR, and no troubleshooting options in regards to them. I also found no extra steps that I haven't followed in the link provided, as the link mostly explains pairing, which I already did successfully. It's as if everything is supposed to work automatically, yet I see no troubleshooting options in case controllers don't automatically show up in VR once paired.

Paired, yes. Working, no.

To be clear, controllers are not working in Mixed Reality home / cliff house, even though paired.

Just un-pair them and re-pair them and they should work. Had this problem before.

Apologies for the trouble you're having. Can you please try the following set of debugging steps:

Make sure your controllers have full batteries and that they are paired correctly using Bluetooth. Try powering the controllers off and on using the Windows Button. If you still cannot see your controllers, try un-pairing and re-pairing each controller in the Settings menu under Devices > Bluetooth

just received my samsung HMD and had the same issue with my motion controllers. at one point one of the controllers did show up in the portal but the graphic representation kept freezing in place / no longer tracking. also the buttons would only respond some of time. basically useless.
Eagleshadow Nov 14, 2017 @ 2:23am
I tried unpairing both controllers, after which I re-paired only the left one while having only mixed reality portal open. I noticed that buttons on the controller started responding to input (pressing touchpad became same as clicking mouse, windows button brings up the mixed reality portal room or menu), but the controller itself is not showing in VR at all.

Upon turning on SteamVR, no controllers are detected, only the icon for headset shows up.

Since the dots on controllers are glowing, and input is responsive, sounds like it could be an issue with headset tracking them or tracking software itself, as controllers have demonstrated successful bluetooth communication, so it doesn't make much sense that it's a bluetooth issue, or does it? Headset has no problem tracking itself. Are there any headsets out there that don't support tracking motion controllers? I have the Acer one, E1306704, SN:QA853157T3010D

Are there any other debugging steps I could take to narrow down the cause of the problem?

This may not help, but I had the exact same problems when I was using the built in bluetooth support for my motherboard. I happened to have a bluetooth USB dongle so I disabled the motherboard bluetooth and used the dongle. Haven't had a problem since.
Eagleshadow Nov 14, 2017 @ 6:01am
I tried removing everything bluetooth that pre-existed on my workstation, and using only the included Plugable USB 2.0 Bluetooth Adapter, after installing drivers for it. Situation is still the same, buttons are responding but controllers are invisible / not tracking.

Update: I managed to get the controllers working on a different PC, ruling out a hardware fault with either controllers or headset.

The difference in setup, was that on primary PC, I went through first time Windows MR setup half a year ago, before controllers were available. This VR setup is something that appeared automatically upon first time plugging in of the headset. After this, I'd only get asked to re-setup the playspace (center and chaperone), never asked to go through full setup which I now found also includes a separate interface for controller pairing and a WindowsMR tutorial. I'm not sure how one would go about getting to this interface again once one has already done it having skipped the controller setup, as such option was nowhere to be found when I was looking for it. I'm talking about the interface shown in screenshots here: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/set_up_windows_mixed_reality

If it is possible to get to this interface again, that might have been the solution to my problem, though I naturally can't be sure.

As I was able to set it up on a different PC that didn't have WindowsMR already set up without controllers, I have no further need to set it up on the primary PC. Thanks for all the help, and hope this thread can be of use to someone in the future having same or similar issues.

for some reason one of my controllers keeps turning off right when i turn it on. i know the batteries are good but it keeps shutting down after a few seconds. why does this happen?
kung-foo-kamel Dec 26, 2017 @ 2:43pm
I had this same problem, I tried everything, they wouldnt show up in WMR or SteamVR, I found it was cuased by another stupid MS update, they installed updated Bluetooth software, I reinstalled the software from the manufacturer, and straight away, the controllers were working again.

This cost me many hours of my time to figurout, I even unistalled WMR and I went through the whole setup again, and it turned out to just be a silly update. I would prefer MS to leave my drivers alone, they can patch their crap, but leave my hardware alone.

Also if WMR is making you remap your playing location all the time, try make sure ytou have the same lighting conditions when you fire the system up, I find changing the lighting will trigger this as I have dimmable lights, I tested the this and I can confirm it causes issues, your best having lights at full brightness.
