Doom II question
Hello The Castle!

Sorry for being offtopic here, but I have some questions about your Doom II related work.

First, let me congratulate to your outstanding masterpiece Redemption of the Slain from 2017, which was in my opinion the best free map ever made for the game (expect similar quality from Romero’s upcoming Sigil episode, but it’s an UDoom pack). The map has stunning cinematic moments from the cacospa through the button-earthquake battle and the neurotic secret area to the bridge carnage, this is something only a handful people can make, like Romero or Duke Nukem’s Allen Blum. I was also a huge fan of No Rest fo the Living, your and Squibbs work on it made more fan of the game than anything else honestly.

Now the question parts:

Despite being a masterpiece, RoTS wasn’t released properly, no upload on idgames database, you need a modified BD with additional files, Doom metal music (which was quintessential to the game) also wasn’t included in the zip, and so on. For this reason, the level wasn’t played by the community, only by a few people, mostly BD fans. It should have gotten a cacowards, but you abandoned it a tad bit too early.

Also the level’s early sections, particularly the infamous caco spam is not compatible with normal Doom, you need double ammo checked until entering the Netherworld, from where the gameplay runs like a clock. Another BD related issue is that map used UDMF format, which is fine, but it used more than 3 skill settings on the enemies, which mean some monsters don’t appear on UV, only on NM.

With these “issues” of an otherwise stellar map I recommend the following: Map should have an extra release with a vaccinated, non BD compatible (but with GzDoom features kept!) release to have a larger following, which might even help your Revulsion plans. This version should fix the skill setting issue, like adding proper UV check for all NM monsters (and vice versa), adding few extra ammos instead of the bots in the caco area, maybe an SSG as well, as it debuts too late in the level, maybe removing the third wave of caco spam (12 instead of 18), and that’s all.

Honestly I can do the same, if you don’t care, but only with your authorization (though, your work is the best when finished by you). What do you think?

Other questions:

You said, no other D2 maps are planned by you in the future. Do you still hold this opinion? You were one of the most talented mappers, man. Don’t you plan to adapt handcrafted Revulsion maps to Doom? They look somewhat similar in style with some GZDoom only features.

Also, you once said you made Duke3D maps in the past. Do you still have them? Or do you plan to make levels for that game or the upcoming Ion Maiden? That would be awesome.

Sorry for being offtopic, your answers are appreciated. Keep up the good work.

"It should have gotten a cacowards, but you abandoned it a tad bit too early."

I thought that it did actually get a cacoward. Hmm?

"Honestly I can do the same, if you don’t care, but only with your authorization (though, your work is the best when finished by you). What do you think?"

I can definitely take a look at the old map to make a special version that does not use brutal doom. I can probably live stream the event as well.

"Don’t you plan to adapt handcrafted Revulsion maps to Doom?"

Design wise they are kind of different beasts I think. Revulsion levels are designed where you can enter each map from 4 different directions. its a looter shooter as well and very gear centered. The monsters are kind of close in terms of what they are especially Demons and Zombie Security guys. Evil Eyes are a lot more evil than Cacodemons... Abominations are too beefy and weird to be mancubie.

I don't think it would translate very well.

"Also, you once said you made Duke3D maps in the past. Do you still have them? Or do you plan to make levels for that game or the upcoming Ion Maiden? That would be awesome."

The only kind of work I will be pursuing at this point will have to be paid positions. I am simply not doing well enough where I am able to "work for free" so to speak. I would have loved to work on Ion Maiden though for sure. My goal is to be well known within the classic indie shooter space along side games like Project Warlock, Strafe, Dusk, Wrath, Ion Maiden and Prodeus.

So far I have not really got myself to that level yet though, :/

My old Duke 3d stuff is long gone I think... Its not even on my super old web page.

^ You can see screenshots of a lot of my most rare works from a very very long time ago. Duke stuff never made it on the list...

Hi Castle, thanks for your quick response and the link you’ve posted. I’m looking forward to the “vaccinated” edition, simply because RotS is my favourite map of Doom. AFAIK it didn’t win a cacoward, but my memory might be wrong.

The dynamic lights, 3D floors, UDMF format, scripted sequences, and the beautifully fit metal music should stay, only the skills, ammo count and the invisibility spheres/bots should be revisited. I actually played the map with both BD and without, and without was a much better experience. Your live streaming will be fun as well. Everything should be put in a wad or pk3 format though, because I saw many people confused and some even used original music which was a bad fit for the various scripted sequences.

As for paid work, if I were you, I might contact Hendricks and the creative team of Ion Maiden for maybe a paid expansion if the game sells well, or even designing levels for the original game, although that ship might have sailed.

Nah I looked it up and it turns out it never got any awards. I thought it did for some weird reason though. If I do live stream working on the map would you be up for helping me promote it so people can show up and check it out?

I would definitely be up for doing something like that. Do you know if they are even still looking for people though?

I think I will recommend it on Romero's Twitter. :)
I'm not a member of Doomworld anymore, but AFAIK you can still promote it in the relevant thread since you have an account there. The main thing is to put all relevant files including music into a single wad or pk3 to not confuse the player, and upload the vaccinated (ammo corrected) version up on idgames (maybe along with the original version too). The same thing was done with Valiant, a popular addon by skillsaw.

As for Ion Maiden, you can ask Hendricks on forums.duke4.net. I think the base game is getting close to finished, but by an addon pack if it sells well will help them and 3DRealms as well.

Seems like good advice. Ill see what I can do, it might be fun to get back into some doom mapping again for sure. Maybe further improve the older map with a newer version with more / improved content. Ill talk about the live stream once I get situated.

In the meantime I am adding a pretty hefty patch to Revulsion right now with a new super hardmode and many bug fixes and tweaks.

I'm eagerly awaiting. It will be great to play the improved RotS again next to playing Sigil. Doom porn. :D

Ok I started up a thread on the ZDoom forums. Not 100% sure if I posted in the right place though.

I am getting ready to begin working on this now.

Redemption Of The Slain (Non Brutal Doom Version)

So I was fairly recently approached with the prospect of making a version of my Redemption Of The Slain doom 2 level balanced for standard GZDoom.

This thread if you want to see.
https://steamcommunity.com/app/719180/d ... 733547440/

Redemption Of The Slain was made for Brutal Doom originally but I am prepping for working on a new special version of the map balanced to run without Brutal Doom in addition to adding some more content as well. Its already a pretty large level though. I am fairly sure that some of the battles need to be reworked to feel better with vanilla Doom 2 weapons and such.

The download for the original version is located on my steemit.
https://steemit.com/gaming/@thecastle/d ... d-download

Ill try to update here once I begin working on the level. Its also likely I will Live Stream working on the map on my DLive which is located here :
https://dlive.tv/TheCastle

If there are any updates, videos or Live streams ill makes sure to post in this thread. You can thank the person in the steam community for asking me as I would not have even thought about coming back to this level if it were not for that thread.
Notes : I am still expecting you to have Mouse look, Jump and crouch to play the map. I am also told that I should include the metal songs in the download to make installation much easier and guarantee it is played with the correct music. Not sure if that is ok with the people who made that music.

As always any feedback is welcome.

This is fantastic news, man. I recommend you to update the DW thread as well. And the final product must be uploaded on id database, that's the relevant site for all Doomers. People usually review maps there.

Ill update both threads for sure and also mention when I begin my live streams a day in advance. I usually stream at very late hours though. So keep that in mind.

Hi Castle! Fantastic job as I expected. Love the new areas, reminds me of Half Life a bit. As it seems, the maps techbase section gets expanded, aren't you thinking about splitting the map into two?

Hmm it doesn't seem necessary to split it up at this point. Performance has barely been effected and I have over 9000 tags left to use.

DLive Stream : Recap : Doom 2, ROTS Rework
https://busy.org/@thecastle/dlive-stream-recap-doom-2-rots-rework

This is a recap of the stream with a link to the vod. The entire night was focused on the new section of the map.
With that said its not quite enough yet, I plan to do another pass on this section once I have an idea of what might be good to do.
Taking suggestions!
