I also found a DS game called Atelier Annie that felt similar, which used a mix of gathering items/fighting monsters, running an alchemy shop, participating in twice-yearly alchemy competitions, and managing a resort all at the same time.
Atelier Annie is from the same universe as the Atelier Iris series on the PS2. There's 3 that I own but just played the second one, and a little bit of the first. I think that the gameplay is a lot like Recettear; explore with a fighter and do achemy back home with the stuff you've found. It's turn base RPG instead of a dungeon crawler but it's of a much better quality than Recettear. I recommand it to you if you wish the fighting in Recettear was more deep.
If you've like the shop management aspect of the game, Rune Factory is good. It's Havest Moon with dungeons and they're both made by Natsume. I've played the first 2 on DS and the first on the Wii and I recommend you avoid the one's on the DS, peticualy the second one, but the one on the Wii is really well made and balanced.
If you like the style of this game and want something...similar...try Power Pros Baseball. I've only played one for the Wii, but the writing, art, and music remind me of this game.
I'm a huge Atelier series fangirl, and I can't tell you how much fun and whimsy the series has. The words simply don't exist. But perhaps this quote gets closest:
"Okay, you know how every RPG has the grand heroes chosen by fate to become wonderful friends and stand up to the evil sorcerer/empire/corporation/monster and keep it from destroying the world?
This game is not about them.
You know how in almost every RPG, buried about halfway down the final dungeon, sitting next to the second to last save point in the game there’s a shopkeeper who has every healing item in the game and every weapon or bit of armor that doesn’t require an epic quest? The one who leaves you wondering: 'Just how in blazes did she get down here? I’m the ridiculously powerful chosen one and it’s almost impossible for me to do it so how did a lowly shopkeeper pull it off'?
This game is about her."
(Snes on is only japanese but there is a translation patch floating around. Might want to look into it if trader/dungeon game interest you.)
By the way i think snes 1 was better.
Ho and another game, not trader oriented but... Try azure dream on ps1, i am ready to bet you will love it.
