Half-Life

Half-Life

Lost Saved Games (Ubuntu)
I got through "Unforseen Circumstances". I created several quick saves. I then saved the game and exited. When I open the game again, there are no saved games to load.

Quick load (F7 is default) worked for me. Start a new game or hazard course and then press F7.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Yup, that worked, Thanks.

I'd like to state for the record that this has happened to me in the mac version as well. It not only wiped out my saved games but also my audio settings. I did the steps above to recover my game, however my list is gone.

Didn't work for me :-(
I was up to "Interloper"
Pressing F7 just loaded me up next to the point you get your suit.

I just looked through the HL steam files and found some older save files.
Have just renamed one to quick.sav and copied it to the newer save folder
Now I'm only back about 30min play before you get to the xen jump. (Whew)
Directories to look at are...
Older save files:
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/SAVE
Newer save files:
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/valve/SAVE

Even more (most?) recent save files can be found here:
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/valve_hd/SAVE

I'm not very good with technology. how do i get to the saves?

Wow, why all the craziness with the file structer? Just put all the saves in the same directory.

Thanks for pointing that out.

It's the result of a bug. The saves should have always have been going into the valve/SAVE directory, but a bug in the initial release meant they didn't. That's now fixed, but the fix has the side effect you see here. The perils of beta software!

I copied the saved games from:
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/valve_hd/SAVE
not from: ~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/SAVE (there is no such folder)

To the newer location:
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/Half-Life/valve/SAVE

This can help me in Ubuntu 12.10.

Another Mac user here whose save files vanished the fourth time I tried to load the game after working perfectly fine for the three previous times I'd turned it on - I got a weird glitch when I tried the F7 quicksave trick, though. I started a new game and attempted to load my saves by hitting F7 when it began, but nothing happened. So I switched the key from F7 to U and tried it then, to see if it was a problem with the key itself, but nothing happened again. Then I quicksaved and tried to load THAT as an experiment, at which point my screen went black before the tram narrator's opening lines played again and the environment faded in to show me that I was standing outside the map in a black void looking at the track that I was supposed to be on. What.

You can use the console command "load filename" to load a save game. For example: load autosave01.sav will load that save.

Oh, thanks! I'll try it out.

(Now it appears that loading any save BUT an autosave results in me ending up outside the map entirely.)
