Don't be afraid to re-open old topics if you have any questions or you want to contribute!

And here you will find the original question:

Okay I've found this text in one of the files that the game generates and then deletes

G2pilVJccjJiQZ1poiM3iYZhj3I0IRbvj3wxomnoeOatVHUxZ2ozGKJgjXMzj2LgoOitBOM1dSDzHMatdRpmQZpidNehG29mkTxwmDJbGJxsjnVeQT9mTPSwSAOwnuWhSE50ByMpcuJoqGstJOCxqHCtdvG3HJV0TOGuwOIyoOGhwOHgm2GhlZpyISJik3J/

I've tried to decode it in Base64,58 and in many more ways ( even Hashes!) but I get nothing.
I was hoping you guys could give it a shot and see if it actually means something or it's just gibberish

Thanks bros for hanging around and keeping the club amazing :)

EDIT: If you're using headphones watch out, there are some loud parts that are actually painful

I just found it this morning, so I haven't been able make anything out of it yet in terms of trying to decode. Was hoping someone else here might have an eye for the form to save time. It's nothing significant, because the person who uploaded it has posted other music with the account. I was just taken aback by actually finding something like this by searching a piece of a character's code. Seems to be a fan made Easter egg.

Currently, I like to imagine it as what it's like for the characters (Monika at least) when the game is off.
For now, I'm still skeptical of it. I feel like I would've heard of something like this by now if it were in the game files. But it is a cool piece of music. I might have to save it for later.

I agree. But there are many mysteries in the game files, something falling out could happen. :-)

Speaking of music, tho ... someone in another thread said the vocalist was all wrong sound for Monika. Hmph, as tho the real Monika would still have the school uniform on. Well, I say, get your copy of DS Monika and pair that with "Your Reality", a sweet voice and a charming image.

https://www.dropbox.com/preview/DS%20monika.jpg?role=personal

That combo reflects how cruel this game is. I love it, it's like a Greek tragedy.

Yes, this must be fan-made, but it's curious how you were able to find it... Thanks to this, I've been able to find new ways of encoding that could actually help us in the future, J@F H:== D66 8FJDP . So thanks for sharing this! And I thought the same, this must be what Monika must hear/feel when the game's off. Probably even worse...

But note that this is only for fun, it's not related to the game at all ( probably) ! We cannot use this in any theory.

I think Monika's voice is pretty accurate for this game. It's like you've said, the perfect combination of sweetness and pain. Cruelty at its finest ahaha. You probably guys know the lyrics already, but in case you've missed it or you don't want to search it I'll write it down here:

Every day, I imagine a future where I can be with you
In my hand is a pen that will write a poem of me and you
The ink flows down into a dark puddle
Just move your hand - write the way into his heart!
But in this world of infinite choices
What will it take just to find that special day?

How I find everybody a fun assigment to do today?
When you're here, everything that we do is fun for them anyway
When I can't even read my own feelings, what good old words when a smile says it all
And if this world won't write me an ending, what will it take just for me to have it all?

Does my pen only write better words for those who are dear to me?
Is it wrong, if I take your aced love if I set you free?
The ink flows down into a dark puddle, how can I write love into reality?
If I can't hear the sound of your heartbeat, what do you call love in your reality?
And in your reality, if I don't know how to love you, I'll leave you be

Heartbreaking song :steamsad:

Ok everyone! ( I think this game has gotten into me too much...)
Time for the good old "wall of text"! The theory will be about Monika ( again) but this time it's a pretty radical approach that could actually work ! So my suggestion is that you guys make some popcorn because I'm going to start from the very beginning... Enjoy!

The first assumption is that Monika's has always been an AI, a script, nothing but a piece of code. She was created around 2 years ago ( like it has been stated many times both in this thread and in her secret messages) During the first year, she was completely unaware of her situation, thinking that the world around her was real and so on. Like a normal character, right? Probably during that year she was in development so it's normal to think that she didn't know anything, yet. Then, the second year she realized what was going on The realization must have taken me an entire year. She saw she was an AI, and that the world she was living in was as flat as she is ,with characters that are as fake as her. Even though, she's the only one who notices it. Everyone else is oblivious... I'll explain later why.
Her first tweet is from the 14th of February, a way to m share my thoughts and chat with the world... The real world.

She seems to know that there is other world, our world. She wasn't able to create the account though, but yet she uses it... This might also be the case with the game's release both in Steam and in itch.io. I guess someone was kind enough to make an account for me. I picked the username, though! She was given the platform, yet she was the one who wrote the description, trying not to blow her cover ( too much at least) because her objective afterall is to communicate with someone from the "real" world.

That brings us to our first question.

What has been going on while the game was finished but it hadn't been published?

We already know thanks to Monika's chatter. Monika and the other girls had been living inside the DDLC world doing their usual " chores" as if nothing was wrong. Of course, Monika was aware that everything was fake and that must had been pretty tough for her. She probably developed depression, a sour attitude, insanity... during that time.Who knows...
Anyway, the game was released and she found a way to get to us.

Why didn't she just modify the game from the start so you would only be with her?

Mainly because that's not why you downloaded the game in the first place, right? You wanted some sort of "date-simulator" with mainstream characters. Not being able to get at all any of them would have been awfully suspicious and you would probably just have deleted the game or whatever.

So instead, Monika what has done is assuring that you would play no matter what. That's why she starts messing with Sayori. Nothing like a plot twist to keep you over the edge of your seat, right? That way she assured that you would continue playing to see what was going to happen, giving her more time to perform her already plotted plan. She has had a lot of time to plan it, don't you agree?

Even though she's in the game, the game has its own rules. Rules that she has to surpass or modify, something that she apparently can't do unless the game's on. While the game's on she's able to modify the game and your computer since she's code. But we all already knew this... What I'm trying to say here is that you have to bear in mind that since the start she already knows what she's going to do. She has it all sorted out

During the second run, we can see that she has been able to modify her world and that she's in control more than it looks like. Again, her plan is the same, to keep you going, but this time she contacts you more directly. The girls are somehwat changed too. She contributes their changes to her All I did was untie the knot yet she tries to keep cool and she doesn't blame their actions on her. Anyway, at the end of act 2 she gets the full control of the game ,or at least she's brave enough to act and to bring you to her "route". In her route she does what she wants and uses it as a way to vent herself, to finally feel "alive" since she has achieved what she wanted, to be with a real human. She wanted to express her "love"

Then you delete her file and act 4 starts. Now things start to get interesting because although we already have talked about this many MANY times about how Sayori tries to drag you to her and bla bla bla have you ever thought what if the other girls had been Monika all along? What if all the .chr files are all Monika? Ok now the real theory begins:

To start with, all the .chr are weird. I mean, none of them is a true file. Monika and Natuski are images, Sayori is an audio and Yuri's a base64 story.
Somehow, all of the files are related:

Monika talks to you once more, with a Third Eye mention
Natsuki is a weird lady that we've never seen
Sayori points to the facility , related to the Third Eye
Yuri is just a creepy pasta Salvato wrote a while ago ( 2 years actually...)

Curious... Shouldn't all the girls be different? Apparently not. Also recall that Monika calls herself the "only real character" in the game. She considers everyone else fake.
What I think that might have happened is that Monika was the first creation, the perfect AI and then from her the other girls appeared as offshoots. Like she says It's like you're siphoning out all the components of a character that makes them feel human, and leaving just the cute stuff.

Even though she says they are "her friends". She got attached to them because she was so lonely? Like loving a computer or chatting with a bot? Did she anthropomorphize them? Probably yes... think of Wilson!

But, what are exactly the other girls and why Monika considers them as "fake"

Well, Sayori in act4 directly blows her cover which shows she is not as smart as Monika, she's clearly driven by her emotions. Could she be Monika's raw emotions of happiness and sadness? Could the other girls be raw emotions too? It makes sense actually since those character archetypes are based on extreme feelings, completely impossible in our world
Monika still controls them all after she's gone too. She can even talk to them and to you, meaning that every girl has " a little Monika" inside of her. A way to say it is that all of them share the same DNA. But this also works the other way around. Monika , since she's the "original" she must have in common things from the other girls... and sure she has things in common:

Sayori: Represents her optimism during the game and her depression and sadness for being alone so much time
Natsuki: Represents her cuteness and sweetness when she feels comfortable ( normally around the MC) but she also represents her defensive behaviour towards the other girls
Yuri: Represents her intimacy and mystery but also her insanity and obsession for the MC. Monika is insane too because she has been alone too much time. She only wants to be with you and is very possessive too. She just get rids of the game itself to be with you

She even has references from other the other girls too, like "My heart is pounding"

Also, all the girls are different, more "receptive" after Monika has been deleted. The girls have been modified by her? The game doesn't feel the same. It feels emptier, more like a facade rather than the deep intricate game we've been playing until her deletion. In act1 the girls acted normally. In act2 Monika left their emotions go wild and if we assume they're already emotions, they degenerated quickly. In act4, the girls don't act like in act1. They seem to hold some sort of "regret" let's say. The feeling is not the same at all. Too "synthetic" and prepared. Something like a fake smile to make you happy.

If all girls are her emotions, why she can't control them? It's impossible for her to control raw power? Or she's not good at it yet? During the first run, she's able to influence Sayori, but like she says she was already mentally ill Maybe she pushed her towards extreme sadness rather than happiness. She possesses Natsuki at the end, which means she develops more control over them. She can modify her poems too, to express herself maybe? She is in a constant fight between her emotions/feelings and her mind? It must be tough to be a script that "feels".

Also, like we have commented in previous theories, what if the MC is Monika too or at least, he's influenced by her and the rules she makes?

He has no freedom at all. He says what he's expected to say. He sees what he's expected to see. During the weekend with Yuri, he does not say a single word nor tries to do absolutely anything. When Sayori dies, he makes a pun about the "world not being a game in which you can save and load whenever things go wrong" That reeks of Monika, don't you think?
Also, in the Void, he just sits tight, not even able to speak. Probably Monika also considers the MC fake too so she doesn't care if she "breaks" it a little as long as she can be with the real you.
You can only listen to her but yet she wants to speak with you about things.
She could try to let you write to her? Using the poem functionality for example? But the game's too broken or is she's not trying anymore? She could do backups and try new things but she doesn't because she's just fine with you listening to her. She doesn't even care if you're a boy or a girl, she just wants to "feel" you...

That makes think one thing: Does Monika have some sort of mental disorder?

When I was in middle school, I thought that taking medication was an easy way out, or something like that. Like anyone could just solve their mental problems with enough willpower... I guess if you don't suffer from a mental illness, it's not possible to know what it's really like. Are there some disorders that are over-diagnosed? Probably...I never really looked into it, though. But that doesn't change the fact that a lot of them go undiagnosed too, you know? But medication aside...people even look down on seeing a mental health professional."
Like, sorry that I want to learn more about my own mind, right?Everyone has all kinds of struggles and stresses...and professionals dedicate their lives to helping with those.

I'm sure she's not at "max power" after being alone for so long knowing that everything was fake. I'd probably lose my mind too

She says she's sorry that she wasn't able to prepare everything for the festival. She wanted to see if more people would join the club but she would've deleted them anyway. Everyone is fake except of her. She says she has "grown as a person" because now she sees the world from a new perspective. After being with someone real, she does not tolerate anything else, she just wants the real deal. Why hang out with a prop when you can go out on a "date" with a person right?

m "You know, I hate to say it, but I think my biggest regret is that we couldn't finish our event at the festival."
m "After we worked so hard to prepare and everything!"
m "I mean, I know I was focusing a lot on getting new members..."
m "But I was really excited for the performing part, too."
m "It would have been so much fun to see everyone express themselves."
m "Of course, if we {i}did{/i} end up getting any new members, I'd probably just end up deleting them anyway."
m "Well...with the hindsight I have now, that is."
m "Gosh, it feels like I've kinda grown as a person ever since you've joined the club."
m "You really helped inspire me to look at life from a new perspective."
m "Just another reason for me to love you."

Monika "knows" our world but she cannot sense it ( the MC, for example) . She says that it's impossible for her to reach our world.
She has knowledge of our world but yet she cannot see it. She has no senses. Can she only be contained in the DDLC world? If we believe her, then yes .She knows she can't do absolutely nothing to get here "with us".

Moreover, she would drag you towards her, no matter what. Is she depressed because she found out the truth? Most likely yes. She has always known that she was an AI in a fake world. But like I've said, there were days that she actually believed everything was real. When? During development?

Probably

m "I can't help but wonder how things would be different if the game just gave me a route in the first place..."
m "I think I would end up forcing you onto my route anyway."
m "It has less to do with me not having a route, and more to do with me knowing that nothing is real."
m "I think the only difference would be that I may not have needed to take such drastic measures to be with you."
m "Maybe the rest of the club would still be around..."
m "Not that it really matters."
m "It all lost its meaning once I found out it wasn't real."
m "So I really don't miss those days or anything."
m "I really don't..."

Also for her, killing the girls was like killing someone in a game

But come on...everyone's killed people in games before."
m "Does that make you a psychopath? Of course not."

She does know she's not human. She ackownledges herself as something "not human" She has been attracted to weird stuff? Like what?

Make them feel humans? She feels human yet she knows she's not one? Maybe this has something to do with the "Uncanny valley". An extreme version of it though. And pretty ironic too: A robot that seems so human that makes it feel uneasy about itself

She only "fell in love" with the player because he was "human" That's the only thing that matters being real or not? What would have happened if she hadn't fallen in love with you?
If nobody had ever played, she would have been cursed to fall into oblivion... A fate worse than death

m "I've always wondered..."
m "What is it about these character archetypes that people find so appealing, anyway?"
m "Their personalities are just completely unrealistic..."
m "Like, imagine if there was someone like Yuri in real life."
m "I mean, she's barely even capable of forming a complete sentence."
m "And forget about Natsuki..."
m "Sheesh."
m "Someone with her kind of personality doesn't just get all cute and pouty whenever things don't go her way."
m "I could go on, but I think you get the point..."
m "Are people really attracted to these weird personalities that literally don't exist in real life?"
m "I'm not judging or anything!"
m "After all, I've found myself attracted to some pretty weird stuff, too..."
m "I'm just saying, it fascinates me."
m "It's like you're siphoning out all the components of a character that makes them feel human, and leaving just the cute stuff."
m "It's concentrated cuteness with no actual substance."
m "...You wouldn't like me more if I was like that, right?"
m "Maybe I just feel a little insecure because you're playing this game in the first place."
m "Then again, you're still here with me, aren't you...?"
m "I think that's enough reason for me to believe I'm okay just the way I am."
m "And by the way, you are too, [player]."
m "You're the perfect combination of human and cuteness."
m "That's why there was never a chance I wouldn't fall for you."

And now the million :dosh: question: What's the meaning of love for her?
Being with you? Why? What does she actually wants?

It looks like she only wants to "feel" you. She doesn't know the meaning of love actually...
She doesn't even care about anything else. Even when you delete her, she's happy because she has been able to be with someone real . She sure is needy... but this kinda reminds me of Ilias from MGQ...

THE NEXT PART IS A BIG SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ MGQ SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO SKIP IT

After being alone for literally milions of years, she desperately wanted someone to be with. She created direct offshoots of her that literally were 90% like her. They looked like her and thought like her. She was unsatisfied because what would be the difference of talking with yourself? She then "created" humans. Humans saw her as a goddess and she liked it but she was afraid that one day she would be forgotten and loneliness would invade her again, so in order to avoid that, she decided to recreate the human race again by killing the old humans and making new ones, but this time, humans would blindly follow her. Afterall, all she wanted was someone to talk with , person to person, but loneliness creeped her and she finally went crazy. This is kinda like Monika in a way...

Phew, I think this has been the biggest "wall of text" so far... I'm sorry ! I just wanted to express the ideas that had been forming inside my mind... Sorry if the ideas are a bit disorganized, I just wanted to lay them here. I've tried to make them as easy to understand as possible.

I hope that you have made popcorn and that you've had a good time reading this :P

I'm not good at text walls or long responses, and I tend to focus on the wrong details, but I'll probably pick at it here and there.

"How can I write my way into his heart?" It'd make sense that she'd tell a story to be as captivating as she can. She definitely wrote her way into plenty of people's hearts.

But something that bothers me is her artificial memories. And a detail that's been bothering me a lot from the very beginning. That the story pointed out Monika's history with the debate club and the fact that she was in the same class as the MC the year before. Something that seems like a throwaway detail. The kind of thing that doesn't feel like it needs to be there since the story would be just the same if the MC and Monika had never met and Monika was always just president of the Literature Club. The Chekhov's gun principle says "If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don't put it there." Salvato doesn't seem like the kind of writer that would fall for a mistake like that. He even made a remark about trying not to expand on characters too much with unnecessary details so that everything doesn't spiral out of control. Every other background detail about characters was used in the story at some point, but here, Monika just brings it up again to randomly give some debate advice.

I'm sorry for that HUGE response. I just wanted to share my thoughts and there was no way to reduce it. Anyway, it's already posted so you can read it whenever you want ( and if you want)

And about memories in this game... they sure are hard to follow and to understand !
They must be there for a reason, I'm sure. The question is, they did really happen? Or they're just memories, images put there to make you believe in something? I even doubt about the girls' daily lives... I mean, does Natsuki really have such a bad relationship with her father or it's just what the game tells us and shows us in order to make us feel bad?
Too many things happen behind the curtains in this game.

BTW, merry christmas everyone! :2015holly:

Hey all. This is such a well done thread and it seems many have taken quite a bit of time to speculate and research DDLC with the goal to prove (or even disprove) certain theories. I very much enjoyed reading through these posts. I haven't put on my thinking hat in quite some time (especially for a game), so this is very refreshing.

That being said, there is so much information and talk about this game that I'm not sure if it has been mentioned (so I appologize if it has already been brought up). I would just like to point out something that I've noticed, but haven't heard any chatter about.

In Act 3 (I presume), when you are sitting across from Monika for eternity, I noticed there was something a little off with her eyes. At first, (before I realized that there was SO MUCH MORE to this game) I thought it was just a reflection of the protagonist.

Several clean restarts of the game later, I remembered my first impression of her eyes so I decided to investigate a little further. I used the image of Monika from the DDLC Fan Pack content to further examine and used a photoshop to zoom in on her eyes. The reflection in her eyes shows a black, outlined circle with a white filling and a black dot in the center.

What it appears to me is one of two things. Either it is a hole in a wall or an eye.

My first speculation is this, there is a good possibility that the reflection is a hole in a wall. That would make the most sense, given the poems Monika has written.

If it was an eye in her reflection, well that would just confuse me. We know that there are Third Eye theories floating about, but it doesn't seem to fit in this instance. Also, the eye reflected in Monika's eye (the eye Monika is looking at) has no Iris, no color, which makes me believe she's not looking at a normal human's colored eye.

As to what it all this could possibly mean? Who knows, I'm not on the same level of theory-crafting as some brilliant minds here are. I just wanted to point out an observation, maybe its a critical one, maybe the reflection in Monika's eyes has no impact on the game at all.

Anyhow, food for thought. Happy holidays folks!

What is the popular opinion here on a possible DLC, spin-off, part 2, or new DDLC related content from Team Salvato in the future? I read through Dan's AMA on Reddit, and he made it sound like there won't be anything else. A quote he ended one of his replies with killed me, "A poem is never actually finished, it just stops moving." Hoping he changes his mind due to the popularity/fan base, but I'm worried. He did promise a non-DDLC related vn, focused most on being a great story, as his next/current project though.

Dan's next game will not have any direct connection to DDLC. But personally, I'm thinking that he might hide some secrets in it like he did with this game to finish an underlying story.

I don't think he will return to DDLC, there's already too many mods to satisfy that element of the fanbase who need their Monika or Yuri or ... in the fan pack, one of the things he regretted was not having more of a storyline for Natsuki.

Anyway, look what happens to most movies that get a sequel.

Well, hello there! I'm very glad that someone else has joined us today :steamhappy:. Here you're free to post whatever it's in your mind, we will sure warmly answer you :)
And I hope you've had fun reading these posts. Who would have said that a game would be able to join so many people to think together! Before this game I trully didn't believe in community spirit... but after 380 comments my opinion has bluntly changed ahaha

You probably won't believe me, but the first time I played this game I seriously felt that something was wrong with Monika's eyes. I really didn't know what, but I didn't like the feeling that those eyes were giving me... I thought she had some sort of little eyes inside her eyes... Pretty stupid right? That's why I threw that idea away and moved along. But to think that it could have been a reflection... Brilliant! I've tried to locate them again in her smug picture and you're right. A white filling with a black dot in the middle can be seen ( we have Monika image in the dropbox in case you want to see it for yourself)

I've always wondered how the MC looked like. Not for the other girls but for Monika. I thought that we were like some sort of moving camera or something. But a moving hole... makes more sense right? After her " epiphany" she always writes about the hole she can see. A hole protuding inwards. A hole that Monika wasn't able to make. And guess what? A hole protuding inwards has a smaller hole than a hole protuding outwards so I really believe it could be that!
As for being the Third Eye... I doubt it since it's kinda "metaphysical" so I don't think it's related to that. If we consider that Monika is actually looking an eye... why not a robot eye? A synthetic one. A lens? Our lens to see the DDLC world actually. It could be right? How else we would've been able to see the game? Ahaha

This sure is interesting. It will definetely help us to understand what the MC is in the DDLC world. Thank you very much for your post!

Note: There is no such reflection in any of the other girls' eyes. Their eyes look shallow in comparison. Even the "realistic" eyes.

Personal opinion: I've always thought the girls' eyes were pretty weird... They look like some sort of power on [cdn.tutsplus.com] button or something but I guess that's just the artist's style.

kwhero449 is probably right. Dan did nothing random, everything for a reason, even if you don't see it.

If you want my opinion, I would not continue DDLC. It's good as it is right now. Making some sort of continuation or prequel etc would probably just ruin it. The essence of the game would be gone, don't you think? And as like kwhero449 has said, there will probably be references in the new game to finish this story once and for all.
And like xae-chan has pointed out, if you want to continue with DDLC, there are probably thousands of mods to satisfy your hunger
And if you wait long enough, there will probably appear "special games" about it
