Both have ranged attacks and one gets a teleport so you basically no longer have to dig through walls, the other gets flying and heat vision for free.
Then there's the bard who has the fastest farm due to a permanent damage aura but it uses melee weapons.
I don't have a higher level rogue tho.
Most people agree that melee classes are harder to play against bosses but they can just dive in rooms full of enemies and annihilate them (or in the case of bards, relax while everything around them dies!). Players have reached the highest level and beat the highest difficulty with every class. Keeping a concussive weapon handy is a good idea if you are playing melee.
Check out this post for a brief description of every class: https://steamcommunity.com/app/697550/discussions/0/1743353164096002469/#c1743353164096020403
Also check out the class descriptions in the store page, complete with nice gifs!
*Easy to recover your belongings if you died and lost your items.
*Thermal vision means no ambush if you play zoomed out and has a decent resolution.
*Flight means easy to escape, no fall damage, assasins are not able to teleport your behind while you're on air, Necromancers are not able to spawn enemies inside of you while you're flying. Mlee enemies are not able to hit you . Even ranged enemies dont have a decent attack range you can "snipe" them
*You can put more usefull rings than no fall damage or thermal vision.
*While your character crazy weak because of the level difference, Frozen skulls are still tanky and able to kill enemies. (for example im currently deepest lvl of nightmare map: My character is lvl 40 and enemies are lvl 60 and Frozen Skull is Rank 3. That means %75 reduced xp and damage)
*With necromancer you can easly skip to the end and mine for best gear.
For new players or those who are thinking of getting the game: Necromancers can fly. Rogues can of course stealth (also makes you run faster) and Enchanters can turn into a wisp form that allows you to fly and makes mobs ignore you. Other classes in the game have movement skills like dashing or teleporting.
- As a Rogue or Enchanter, retrieving your items is even easier! With their class abilities, enemies won't even attack you (don't get too comfortable in boss rooms though!).
- Thermal vision is awesome and not hard to get on items - but playing a necro means you don't need special items for that.
- While it takes a lot of crafting, any class can fly with the Cosmic Armor set! Personally I would leave that for late in the game. There is also the Tabard of Air that any class can use, it allows you to sort of hover if you use it with a fast shooting weapon (including concussive weapons for melee characters). Use it with a spraying wand for some chaotic, stuck-on-the-ceiling flying!
- Rogue is the king of sneaking past hard mobs to mine for advanced materials, Enchanter as well.
Necromancer's stat system also nice, only thing you need to do is giving all your stat points to vitality because after making your Undead Hearth skill Rank 5 it will also increase your resistances.
I was thinking to make a suggestion to developer. In Heroes of Hammerwatch, there is a passive bonus system when you play and level up a character it also starts to provide little bonuses to your all other characters. Its under powered little bonus system which pushes players to play every character in the game. A feature something like that would be nice.
For example killing the last boss in every difficulty can provide bonuses like this: (Rogue: 2% dodge, Necromancer: 2% Cold and Poison Resist, Mage: 2% Fire and Lightning, Warrior: 2% Max HP, Bard 2% Max Mana, etc.) So for rogue compleating Normal provides 2% dodge, Nightmare 4% dodge, Hell 6%, Inferno 10% dodge. Because inferno hardest and last difficulty it deserves double reward.
Personally I would love roguelite elements in the game like you suggested. I am not aware of any such future plans and I don't remember if David (the developer) likes such mechanics BUT the upcoming account-bound persistent town option is just a step in that direction! Since the game will have that functionality, I think it would be easy to implement additional similar roguelite 'legacy' mechanics if both the developer and the community want it - at least technically easy; I imagine the design can get very complicated!
Oh yeah and you can self heal from time to time.
If you want steady, reliable weapon damage, i don't think anything tops cleric. It's even better during boss fights, as they constantly spawn monsters, so your smite keeps gaining power.
I haven't decided if it is my favorite for sure since I need to play through with other classes more, plus we will be getting skill trees. But the way things are looking I suspect Cleric will be my favorite class in this game.
