GOG or Steam?
My original CD is still holding up but I'm ready to buy a new digital copy in case the worse happens as has with so many others in my collection... this game was recently on sale on GOG and now is on Steam obviously but is there a good reason to go one way or another?

Totally up to your preference. GOG is DRM-free, so that installer will work as long as there is an OS that can run it. There is also a GamersGate version where you can also just save the product code and the installers. Steam is convenient and some people like to have all their games here, and maybe it is the only platform where you can own the entire franchise at once, but that's the only argument you may get.

Other than some nice little extras exclusive to the GOG release the versions are the same. Both can be moded just fine.

GOG also has their optional Galaxy client, which is fairly similar to Steam and supports automatic updates.

I meant convenient as in most people have most of their games here. I know about and really like Galaxy, but at its announcement they promised the ability to merge your Steam library in it, and until that happens, it's just another client, like Origin.

Please provide a source for that information. I don't recall them saying that. While there are many promised features which are not yet implemented in GOG Galaxy, this shouldn't be one of them.

It's been one of the initial promises before even it got to the closed pre-beta state. You can only find traces of it on a few forums maybe here and there, like one of the replies on this reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamernews/comments/34y0ov/gog_galaxy_the_steamlike_client_from_good_old/ The original promise was Steam integration in the sense that it takes over all achievements for the new Galaxy achievement system and lets you start Steam games from Galaxy.

I would pick gog over steam any day with the way steam is heading. Gog is becoming more and more awesome, while steam is going more and more downhill.

I usually just buy where it's cheapest at the time though, so I have games all over the place. Still, in terms of preference, I'd say go with gog. The whole DRM free thing they have going is what it should be everywhere. None of this DRM nonsense that doesn't actually stop anyone from pirating anyway.
