What's next for Icons' monetization
(Crossposted with Reddit; Wavestaff will be available to discuss here, on Reddit, and on Discord.)

TLDR: We are making changes to the F2P system based on your feedback, including how you earn spectra and how fast you unlock characters.

Long version:

Heading into Early Access, what we were most looking forward to is that we would now be able to get feedback in real time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

By far the clearest feedback has been that our Free to Play systems are not where they need to be. We hear you loud and clear, and we agree.

The team is going through and reading every comment, review, tweet, and thread that we can. In doing so, we've learned frustrations with our F2P implementation fall into three categories:

1. Earning spectra is too slow. There's no clear way to earn enough spectra to get the items you want, and progress on this moves very slowly or not at all for players early in their Icons career.

2. Characters unlock too slowly. This itself, we hear two key complaints. That first character unlock, which should be a huge and exciting moment, is not early enough in the early game. And, if you played during Closed Beta, you might already have bonded with a character who now takes an unclear (and potentially lengthy) time to earn.

3. New players are unsure of whether a new character is worth picking up, as they don't have a means to try it.

We have features in the pipeline to address all three of these issues. We're moving several of them up in priority as of right now.

We are exploring several options for earning spectra, including as a new player in the game. We want you to see clearer, faster, better progress in the shop towards the specific items you want.

We're adding new tools that our designers can use to add character unlocks at different milestones, such as an early level for new players. Unlocking your first character should be an important, achievable moment for new players, and we'll soon have the ability to layer that into the early game. In addition to that, we're exploring ways we can provide a clear path for unlocking your character of choice.

We're adding tech to give you ways to try a character before buying them. The lead candidate is enabling the whole roster in training mode. (The actual implementation of this may change, but this is to illustrate how we're thinking about it.)

This coming week we'll have more details for you on what some of these features will look like, and when you can expect them.

There is one change we can make right away: Kidd is going to remain a part of the starting roster for new/free players for the foreseeable future. We originally said the starting roster was Ashani and Xana, with Kidd as a bonus for pre-Early Access signups. Given your feedback, it's clear that there are more benefits to having that third character available, than there are for reducing it to two. We will likely revisit this as tools come online for bringing character unlocks into the early game, but for now, we officially welcome Kidd to the starting roster.

MUCH more to come. We remain incredibly lucky that so many players want Icons to be great. Please keep that feedback coming - it's what we're here for.

Sounds pretty good.
One question though: Will changes to levelups be retroactive? In other words, will we get penalized unless we stop playing completely until the changes are in?

It's awesome that you're taking feedback like this into account. I was actually one of the closed beta players you mentioned, as I had heavily practiced and bonded with Zhurong in the closed beta, without putting much time into other characters. However, I must ask, will this character unlock in the early game be given to players who have already reached the milestone?

While it seems like they've listened in regards to earning Spectra more easily and unlocking characters more quickly, they straight up ignored one of the biggest problems a lot of us have with this game. A lot of us just want to buy Spectra directly instead of having these gambling boxes. The fact that they didn't mention these boxes at all is extremely telling.

Drop the loot boxes, enable purchasing of Spectra instead, and then you'll have my money and my time. Until then, I'll take both of them elsewhere.

Hold the phone; some characters in this game are only available through random loot boxes?

In 2018?

Most of them are, actually.

Local play should just have all characters unlocked I feel...

I give credit to the devs for actually listening to the players. It's a step in the right direction, I tested the game myself on my stream and I do like what theyre doing minus a few issues that are shared among most players. I don't mind the loot boxes being there but I do think there should be a way to directly buy Spectra for unlocks and stuff.

I like the quick response and direction this is going. You are close to turning my thumbs down review into a thumbs up review.

I will for sure once Weishan, Kidd and Raymer are more pleasant to play against.

Nothing about the Xana infinite throws? Kidd is a problem but Xana is just pure annoyance with her combo game and the way hitstun works in this.

Fortunately, that's false.

At current, characters can be aquired via 4 methods:

- Portal Pack drops (one character is guaranteed to drop within 30 levels)
- 1,000 in currency, earned through duplicates (or the 1,100 giveaway for current players)
- $4.99 for a single character
- $24.99 for every current and future character

Wavedash has said they'll be revising the first two methods soon. Both to lead to a faster first character unlock, and to make in-game currency easier to aquire.

Also to set the facts straight: they officially announced the game would have loot boxes 2 months ago.

Oh, that's pretty neat. I was waiting until I knew if the levelup changes were gonna be retroactive to play more, so I didn't see that.

And my bad for skipping the wallet options for character unlocks. If a player doesn't mind using it, it is definitely a valid way to unlock characters.

Thanks for the corrections, Crispy.

Edit: Now I see there were a bunch of news posted after the 15th. Keeping an eye on discussions alone (and waiting for an answer) might have been a mistake.

Between the 1,100 Spectra and all characters being available to everyone in practice mode, The game now has a solid start for those just starting out.
