In today's article, we'll take a look at one of the most iconic and recognizable (if you recognize pixels) camouflage patterns—MARPAT (MARine PATtern).

Why and what for is the new camouflage?

To understand the wider context of the creation of this camouflage, we need to go back in time a little. Specifically, to the 1980s, when the M81 Woodland camouflage was introduced to all US Army units. This pattern proved to be a very successful successor to ERDL. From a purely structural point of view, this move made a lot of sense. Instead of producing different types of camouflage for each unit, or very similar ones, the decision was made to unify them, which allowed for cutting production costs and developing several similar solutions. The distinguishing features remained elements of the formation, such as emblems, ranks, and unique elements of the uniform (the eight-pointed hat in the case of the marines for example). 

Despite its validity from the point of view of the entire army and the state, this approach didn't necessarily appeal to all units and soldiers themselves. Elite formations didn't want “some civilians” to confuse them with National Guard units or other “less elite colleagues.” The Marines wanted to stand out on the battlefield so that both allies and enemies would immediately know who they were dealing with.

Beginning of development

The official start of work is considered to be April 2000. It was then that a team led by the legendary Timothy O'Neill began research on a new pattern designed specifically for the Marine Corps. The initial assumptions were simple: this camouflage had to be different from the others and be “modern,” something befitting the approaching new century.

The team initially focused on comparing dozens of different camouflage patterns from around the world. After initially rejecting designs that were outdated or didn't fit the main objectives of the project, Tigerstripe camouflages remained in the play. These were broken down into their technical components and modified until what we know today as MARPAT was created.  

Here, we should take a moment to acknowledge team leader Timothy O'Neill, because you may rightly ask how it was possible to go from “different stripes” to pixel camouflage. One of O'Neill's nicknames is Father of Digital Camouflage. He was a pioneer in the field of digital camouflage, and his most famous work is “Dual-Tex,” which has been tested since 1977, both as camouflage for vehicles (definitely the most famous part) and, to a lesser extent, for ordinary infantry. However, we will not discuss this camouflage here. 

Controversy and final pattern

After developing the main design concepts, the second stage of work began. Three different versions of camouflage were given to the units. The first one is almost identical to what we now know as MARPAT, the second one resembled the older Tigerstripe type in terms of pixel distribution, while the third one was a desert variant of MARPAT. As a result of testing and direct work by designers with the soldiers themselves, the second variant (the Tigerstripe variation) was identified as the one that the soldiers liked the most. As a result, the command chose version number one. Thus, the basic MARPAT for forest environments was born. The colors that make up the forest MARPAT are green, brown, and black in various shades. On November 7, 2001, it was confirmed as the new standard pattern for the Marines.  The first public display took place on January 12, 2002, at Camp Lejeune

After it was shown to the public, many voices were raised claiming that it was an almost blunt copy of the Canadian digital camouflage CADPAT, which had been implemented by Canada several years earlier in 1996. This is where various conspiracy theories and speculations arise. Some anonymous informants claim that Canada shared this camouflage with the US at the request of the Marines as a result of a program to exchange military experience and technology. Other anonymous informants claim that it is a completely unique product, based on O'Neill's experience and efforts to develop the “Tigerstripe” camouflage.

What really happened? We will probably not find out in the near future. The fact is that the research team worked on a new camouflage pattern (documents confirming this part have been stored), but on the other hand, the overall pixel distribution and size in both camouflages is very similar. So, as in many such cases, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.  

The complete re-equipping of the Marines with the new type of camouflage and elements made from it was officially completed on October 1, 2004. 

An interesting feature that distinguishes MARPAT from other similar (intentional or unintentional) digital camouflages is the stamp with the logo and the letters USMC, which are used to mark rolls of fabric and, as a result, can be found on random elements of the uniform. 

How does it work?

The easiest way to explain this aspect is based on a standard camouflage pattern consisting of two or more colors. In the case of M81 Woodland and similar patterns, camouflage works similarly to prescription glasses and contact lenses. If we are in the right spot (of course, there is no single specific spot in the case of camouflage), we are quite well hidden. However, if we move out of the “focus,” we become more visible again. To simplify further, let's say that for this type of camouflage, it is best to be at a distance of 200-500 meters. If we are closer or further away, we are more visible or begin to stand out against the background. The size of the spots and their distribution are very important in this case. As a result, more “conservative” camouflages such as MTP or MultiCam are still being developed. 

In the case of digital camouflage, such as MARPAT, we have the same effect as with device screens. If you get close enough, you will notice that each shape consists of a tiny square or light point in the case of giant displays. However, as you move away, the individual squares or light points form a single coherent (if we want it to be) or less coherent image. Digital camouflage uses exactly the same effect. The further away we are from the soldier, the more “clearly” he blends into the background around him. Of course, the colors of the background must more or less match those of the uniform.

The whole thing is, of course, based on tricks designed to deceive our brains, which are accustomed to the shapes of nature that have surrounded us as a species for tens of thousands of years. Apart from animals, symmetry and sharp edges are rare phenomena, which automatically attract our gaze and attention. 

MARPAT is still used by the Marines, and various similar digital camouflages have been developed for both the standard infantry of the United States and most other major countries on the international stage. 

MARPAT in World War 3

Anders Multi-Role Combat Platform (Wielozadaniowa Platforma Bojowa, WPB), the platform was named after General Władysław Albert Anders, a famous commander of the Polish forces in the Second World War, who fought bravely only to be persecuted by the communist regime after the end of the war, much like another Polish hero, General Maczek.[armoredwarfare.com]

The initial idea was to transform the Polish armed forces to a highly-mobile force organized into Mechanized Brigades, equipped with either light wheeled vehicles (the Rosomak[armoredwarfare.com] platform) or with tracked vehicles (the Anders platform). The Puma[armoredwarfare.com] family of upgraded BMPs was also considered for the role, but the program was canceled earlier on.

The platform was developed by OBRUM Gliwice with the first variant introduced being a Light Tank or a Fire Support Vehicle. The designation of the vehicle was a source of some controversy – the platform was heavily constrained by the military weight demands in order for it to be air-transportable by the Airbus A400M cargo plane. The maximum weight of the vehicle was to be 35 tons, which meant that the armor had to be very light. Calling that particular Anders configuration a tank would therefore be quite a stretch – the vehicle was not able to slug it out with real Main Battle Tanks and was more suitable for the Fire Support role despite the company’s claims.

The actual development started in 2008. It took only 24 months to develop the platform and to build a demonstrator of the Light Tank configuration. The Light Tank configuration demonstrator was first introduced to public during the MSPO 2010 expo in Kielce, where it also received its official name after General Anders and was christened by his daughter.

The prototype was intended for a crew of three men (driver, commander and gunner) and was made of welded steel plates (ironically, these plates were forged in the Czech Republic, not Poland). It was assembled at AMZ Kutno and then transported to OBRUM Gliwice where it was finished. The exact thickness of the plates was unknown but it was stated that the basic protection level of the Anders Light Tank was STANAG 4569 Level 3 (protection against 7.62mm AP rounds at 30 meters only).

It could, however, reach STANAG 4569 Level 5 or even Level 6 according to some reports by installing additional armor plates (the armor system was made to be modular), which would make it resistant to 25mm APDS shells at 500 meters from the front (in case of Level 5) or 30mm APFSDS shells at 500 meters from the front (Level 6).

The vehicle weighed approximately 33 tons and did therefore fit the military requirements (although the increase to Level 5 or Level 6 protection increased its weight up to 44 tons). It was powered by the German MTU 8V199 TE20 engine producing some 710hp, giving it an excellent power-to-weight ratio of 21.5 hp/t. If needed, the engine could up-tuned to some 800hp to handle the increased armor weight, but this change was not performed on the prototype, which was fast enough even with the standard variant – it had the maximum speed of 72 km/h. The suspension was a newly developed hydromechanical system with six roadwheels on each side and drive sprocket in the front.

The vehicle was equipped with a low-profile manned turret – the crew is sitting in the turret basked, but inside the hull. This solution generally increases the crew protection at the expense of internal volume and crew situational awareness since it has to rely on various periscopes and optics to see outside. The turret is armed with a Swiss 120mm RUAG smoothbore gun along with a coaxial 7.62mm UKM-2000C machinegun (the same type used in the Rosomak turret). The cannon was automatically loaded and takes ammunition from a 12-round magazine. The Fire Control System was of Polish origin, developed by Przemysłowe Centrum Optyki. The gun was not stabilized on the prototype, but the stabilization mechanism was developed for it.

Additional armament consisted of the Kobuz remote-controlled weapons station module armed either with a 12.7mm heavy machinegun or a 40mm grenade launcher. Additional equipment and protection measures included:

• Obra laser indication warning system

• Israeli Trophy APS (mock-up only)

• Ukrainian Zaslon APS (mock-up only)

• Radmor or Fonet communication systems

• Air conditioning

• Auxiliary Power Unit

• Night/Day PKN-72B sights for the driver by Przemysłowe Centrum Optyki

• Stopfire fire suppression system by WSK PZL Warszawa II

• NBC protection equipment (filtration and warning systems)

• Talin navigation system

The MSPO introduction of the vehicle was met with lukewarm response. The most common criticisms included the fact that the vehicle was under-developed at the time (missing stabilization was considered a major problem for a vehicle that effectively had to rely on mobility to survive) and its protection levels were considered insufficient (especially in contrast with the older T-72 variants it was supposed to replace). These issues resulted in the military’s dismissal of the project at the time.

Despite these setbacks, OBRUM continued to develop the platform, resulting in an IFV configuration demonstrator with the Italian HITFIST-30P turret used on Rosomak. Another Fire Support version also appeared two years later, this time with a Belgian CT-CV turret by CMI Defence , armed with a 105mm gun. This variant was introduced to public during the EUROSATORY expo in Paris in 2012. Another little-known variant is a missile tank destroyer.

The final fate of the project is not well documented. Failing to attract any serious attention, it seemingly disappeared and there were several cancellation reports with the Polish military realizing that such light fire support vehicles would never replace a true Main Battle Tank and opting to purchase a number of modernized Leopard 2 Main Battle Tanks instead. The platform appeared back in 2016 under a different name (UMPG) in its IFV configuration. Despite the designation change, it’s clearly a further development of the Anders platform – unfortunately, without the General’s name this time. Whether it will attract more attention than its ill-fated predecessor remains to be seen, but given the fact that its IFV competition (CBWP Ratel) exists in model version, the chances of it becoming Poland’s future tracked IFV (replacing the BMP series) are rather good. Currently, Anders' direct competitor is also being produced. The army has placed an order for 116 BWP Borsuk vehicles, which are currently in production. The first production units are expected to be delivered to the army at the end of this year (2025).

So, the future of the Anders project is almost certain. It will remain as one or few prototypes, locked away or rotting somewhere on the factory grounds.

Anders in World War 3 is a progressive tank destroyer that players receive upon reaching level 6. It is the first representative of this class of Strike available to players.

As its class name suggests, it is best suited for destroying other vehicles. It can be equipped with one of two turrets, the first with a 105mm gun and the second with 120mm armament. The first one deals less Alfa damage than the second one, but fires faster.

Anders can be described as a gun on a tracked chassis, ideal for hit-and-run tactics. Powerful armament, good mobility, and poor durability mean that, apart from this tactic, it is best used to support allies from a distance. As for armor, the front is decent, while the sides and rear only protect against machine guns in the basic version.

Due to these characteristics, combat with infantry in urban areas will end very quickly and spectacularly for Commander of Anders. It is possible to equip the vehicle with additional protection systems such as APS, jammers, or reactive/net armor, but none of these upgrades will change the core gameplay of this vehicle. 

The Snake version of Anders is currently available in our in-game store for 3000 SP / 120 UNC.

The Snake is characterized by camouflage of the same name and a configuration focused on maximum and overwhelming firepower. The turret with a 105 mm cannon and a 25 mm RCWS will allow you to destroy almost everything that isn't a main battle tank almost instantly. Reactive armor, on the other hand, will allow you to survive a little longer in urban terrain.

The Mout version of Anders is currently available in our in-game store for 3000 SP / 120 UNC.

The Mout features Sea camouflage and a configuration designed for heavy combat in urban areas. Its powerful 120 mm gun allows it to inflict heavy damage on any opponent with a single shot. It'is protected against infantry weapons and ATGMs by a tandem of heavy APS and net armor on the sides and rear of the vehicle. This is an almost ideal configuration for tactics involving a quick devastating attack and then jumping between buildings or behind an obstacle. 

Both blueprints will be available in the store for over 20 days.

Operators, today we would like to familiarize you with two weapons that are currently available in our in-game store and are part of the Rose edition. These are the MSBS-K assault rifle and the RPG-7.

Let's start with the standard explanation of the name and history of this rifle. MSBS (Modułowy System Broni Strzeleckiej) translates as: Modular Small Arms System. GROT is the official name adopted in honor of General Stefan Rowecki, while grot itself means arrowhead.

This weapon system is not just an assault rifle, but, as the name suggests, a whole family of guns. The design began its life as part of the once-fashionable giant “soldiers of the future” programs. In Poland, this program was given the name Tytan (Titan).

The aim of this part of the program was to develop a family of arms (as modular and versatile as possible) to replace the aging Beryls, AKMs, and obsolete carbines from the AK family. In other words, these weapons were supposed to represent a leap forward from old Soviet designs to the best that the modern world has to offer.

December 15, 2009, when the first two fully functional technology demonstrators were publicly presented, can be considered the symbolic date of birth.

In the initial phase of the program, the focus was on two versions of the system: the standard bolt-action version and the then popular and more futuristic-looking bullpup version.

Low funding for the development of weapon systems in the first decade of the XXI century resulted in slow development of this design. The first contract for the Polish army was not signed until 2017. To date, over 100,000 units of all versions and variants (A1, A2, and the latest A3) have been produced for the Polish army and other users .

As for the current status of the program, it is by no means complete. Ultimately, the entire platform is to consist of the following variants: battle rifle (currently existing and in use), rifle with grenade launcher (slowly being introduced into service), mini version (smaller magazine, shorter barrel, max 13 inches) , a marksman rifle (not to be confused with a sniper rifle with a longer barrel), and a machine gun (longer heavy barrel). Most of the components between all these variants are to be exchangeable, which will simplify logistics in the event of a conflict and allow a larger number of them to be kept in constant working order. 

In terms of construction, it is a typical semi-automatic rifle powered by the energy of gunpowder gases. However, during its design, it was equipped with several interesting features and solutions. The idea was that each rifle would have some type of optics assigned to it, with the front and rear sights treated as backup rather than primary, as is the case with older designs. The designers also took into account the comfort of left-handed users. This weapon has a fire selector and a reloading mechanism on both sides, while the ejection of cartridge cases is determined by a symmetrical plate, which, when moved, determines in which direction they are ejected in a matter of seconds.

In response to market demand, a 7.62 caliber version was also developed. Currently, the only known user of this variant is Rwanda. 

MSBS-K ROSE - 520 UNC

In this version, the MSBS assault rifle has been equipped with carbon fiber elements and decorated with dark red colors. 

To improve user ergonomics, a potato grip, a pistol grip known from the M4, and a stock with greater customization options have been added. In addition, this version includes additional FMJ ammunition. 

The RPG-7, which stands for Ruchnoj Protivotankovyj Granatomit (Hand-held Anti-Tank Grenade Launcher), is the primary anti-tank weapon of the Warsaw Pact infantry, later Russia and other countries, to this day. This weapon was introduced to the first units of the USSR in 1961, replacing the RPG-2, which was similar at first glance. In terms of design, it is a development of weapons developed during World War II, such as the Bazooka (supplied by the Americans since 1942), Panzerschreck, and Panzerfaust. 

It combines the best features of these weapons, such as an oversized front mounted grenade (Panzerfaust) with reusability (Bazooka, Panzerschreck), and introduces new features, such as firing the grenade with a powder charge, which eliminates the need for additional protection for the shooter, as in older designs.

The RPG-7 consists of a 40 mm caliber tube launcher and an oversized projectile, which can now be as large as 105 mm. Dividing the RPG into two parts allows for an almost unlimited number of modifications and weapon developments. Despite the fact that this weapon is almost 65 years old, new types of grenades are still being developed. 

Initially, only cumulative warheads were available for combating vehicles. Currently, armies that still use this system can use tandem warheads, fragmentation warheads, smoke warheads, and thermobaric warheads in addition to the modern cumulative warheads that are still available. This makes the RPG a system suitable for destroying almost any static or slow-moving target, or even for harassing the enemy with indirect fire. The launcher itself has also undergone countless changes, making it lighter and more durable while remaining fully backward compatible. Currently manufactured models can be equipped with modern daytime optical sights, as well as thermal imagers or night vision devices. Despite its age and archaic nature compared to newer solutions from around the world, thanks to numerous modifications, new ammunition, and many armies that still want to develop this weapon, it is a dangerous opponent to be reckoned with. 

Thanks to its simple design, which facilitates mass production and uncomplicated operation, it has become the most popular solution in its class of hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers and a cult weapon, immortalized in many films, TV series, and, of course, games such as World War 3. 

RPG-7 ROSE - 520 UNC

The Rose version of the RPG-7 grenade launcher features carbon fiber components to reduce weight. Components that are not made of carbon fiber are coated in dark red. A better sight with 5x magnification has also been added.

Let us begin this article by unravelling the mystery surrounding the name of this vehicle and the general nomenclature of tanks in China.
Due to general military secrecy and the lack of available official sources, Chinese vehicles are referred to in the West as Type and year.

In this case, we have Type 99. This is the name given to this vehicle by western military enthusiasts.
However, there is a second name that you may associate from World War 3 - ZTZ 99. ZTZ is a simplified Chinese name converted into an alphabet understandable to Westerners. When expanded, it is Zhuangjia Tanke Zhongxing, which when translated into English means Armoured, Tank, Medium. The more observant players may notice that this tank is not an MBT but a medium tank. This is directly related to Chinese nomenclature, where light and medium tanks still exist, but something like Main Battle Tank doesn't. However, it can be considered that ZTZ = MBT. That's it, let's move on to the article. In which we will stick to the Western name.

Type 99 is currently the most advanced mass production Main Battle Tank of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Type 99

As is common with many Asian vehicles (the Chinese in particular), there is very little official information and much of what we know is based on various estimates from military analysts working for reputable sources.

The general consensus is that the production variant of the Type 99 MBT was developed from the Type 99 prototype as China's first true third generation MBT. The prototype tank (often – incorrectly – labeled as Type 98) was first shown in public on the Chinese National Day military parade on October 1 1999. The prototype and production Type 99 both abandon the Soviet concept of tanks in favor of more western technology, even though traces of Russian designs can be found deep inside the vehicle.

The hull is low and generally typical of Chinese tanks but, unlike the previous Chinese MBTs, the turret is welded. The vehicle is protected by composite armor and by an advanced spaced armor kit and ERA (allegedly comparable to Russian Relikt), resulting in an estimated frontal protection on par with the newer variants of the Russian T-90 MBT (roughly 1000-1200mm of RHAe versus HEAT rounds).
Type 99 is equipped with a JD-3 laser system that allows it to send high intensity laser bursts (dazzling) at targets that are using their own lasers to target the Type 99 MBT. The desired effect of this is the damaging of enemy optics and temporary blindness of the enemy gunner.

The main armament is the automatically loaded fully stabilized Chinese 125mm ZPT-98 smoothbore gun, capable of firing 9M119M Invar and 9M119M1 Invar-M missiles (the often-cited Refleks designation belongs to the launching system, not the missiles themselves) along with other standard former Warsaw Pact 125mm ammunition. Some sources claim the gun is a license-produced version of the Russian 2A46M, but that is not the case – the gun is longer.
The effective rate of fire is around 8 rounds per minute. The Fire Control System is indigenous and – allegedly – highly accurate, although how exactly it fares compared to other contemporary systems is not known.

The vehicle is powered by a 1200 horsepower 150HB diesel, giving it decent mobility (the maximum speed of 80 km/h, cited by Wikipedia, is, however, speculative). The acceleration is said to be very good as well thanks to its power-to-weight ratio of approximately 23 hp/t (the vehicle weighs around 52 tons).

Type 99

Performance-wise, Type 99 should be on par with other third generation tanks such as the T-90 or Abrams, but it has never participated in any armed conflict and therefore it's very difficult to evaluate its performance. Some Chinese sources are known for notoriously overestimating domestic tanks to the point of absurdity and the only lead the public has to Chinese vehicle performance beyond the truly obsolete types participating in Middle-Eastern wars is the Chinese participation in Tank Biathlon.

In Chinese service, approximately 700-800 Type 99s of several variants have been built since 2001 and production seems to continue still. It is, however, unlikely that this particular vehicle will ever be exported and various speculations about export deals to Pakistan and other countries that can be found on the internet are almost certainly false. Other advanced Chinese vehicles, such as the VT-4, are, however, available for export.

Type 99A

The Type 99A variant is an improved model of the Type 99, first tested in August 2007 and entering service in 2011. It shares most of its predecessor's features:

• A western-style welded turret

• 125mm ZPT-98 autoloaded smoothbore gun, capable of firing Invar and Invar-M missiles

• A powerful diesel engine giving it excellent mobility

But there are improvements. For one, the vehicle is powered by a 1500hp 150HB-2 diesel engine, an improved variant of the older 1200hp 150HB model used on the original Type 99. This gives it excellent mobility and acceleration, although the numbers available publicly (maximum speed of 80 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 32 km/h in 12 seconds) are unofficial and most likely speculative. The weight, however, increased from approximately 52 tons to 54 tons or even more (sources vary).

The turret was also enlarged (possibly in preparation for the indigenous 140mm gun that is still in development) and fitted with a more effective, redesigned ERA kit and possibly a soft-kill APS system.

Type 99A

Precious little is known about this most modern Main Battle Tank of the People's Republic of China. Type 99A supposedly has more advanced electronics (including a GPS system and an indigenous battle management system), but details are very much classified.

It's worth noting that while many online sources use names such as Type 99A1 and Type 99A2, these names are incorrect and (much like the Type 98 designation) probably made up by analysts or even journalists. What is sometimes referred to as Type 99A2 is in fact Type 99A while Type 99A1 is still "just" Type 99.

China is currently estimated to operate around 200 of these modernized Type 99As with more being converted from the standard Type 99 MBTs. Type 99A, just like the original Type 99, is not offered for export and will very likely remain only in Chinese service.

In WW3, Type 99 appears under the more official Chinese ZTZ99 name. This vehicle is part of the current Red Line season pass. To obtain it, you must unlock level 18 of the pass. 

Like other vehicles in World War 3, the ZTZ99 can be found in the Strikes tab.

There are three main versions of this vehicle, based on the available modules:

The base version is equivalent to the Type 99 Prototype with a cast turret. 

Version with upgraded modules has a welded turret, and the vehicle roughly corresponds to the production version of the Type 99.

The version with the best modules, including a reactive armour hull, is the Type 99A model.

This week, in our Boot Camp series, we will give you a look at the strike system in WW3, and various strike types. These are currently available only in the TAC mode, as the smaller modes do not support them.

Strike SystemThe strike system allows you to use special equipment for a cost of “Strike Points” that you earn in-game. Every action you perform gives you these points, with objective play being the most rewarding.

You have 3 slots for strikes in each loadout, and each of them contain different categories of strikes. Let’s look at each of these now.

The first slot can be considered a utility slot. Here, you can carry a UAV or a Jammer. UAVs let you know where the enemies are, and award you a bonus for teammates who get a kill with your support. Jammers can protect you from being marked by a UAV, scramble enemy drone controls, prevent the enemy team from spawning on teammates or vehicles in the jamming area, and also stop the enemy team from using strikes.

The second slot is almost purely offensive. You can choose missiles for anti-personnel and anti-tank purposes. Simply call it in once you gain enough points, and guide it to the target. You can also choose various artillery types. There are two types of artillery: laser-guided and an area barrage. Once you call in a barrage, a ranging shell will fire, giving the enemy a few second warning to get out of the area before the main barrage begins. Laser-guided artillery will follow the mark of your laser until it runs out of shells. And lastly, you can equip a bombing run. Varying in speeds and drop area, these will arrive at the location you select on the tablet.

The last slot contains your vehicles and drones. You can choose small aerial drones, large aerial drones, land drones, and many vehicles ranging from IFVs to MBTs. For drones, you can call them in anywhere on the map, but it is recommended to do so while hiding, as the enemies killing you results in your drone being destroyed too. Vehicles can be called in at base or on any captured objective. Be careful, however, as smoke marks your vehicle’s deployment zone and can easily be camped by an enemy. You can also respawn in vehicles from the deploy menu.
