keep losing by confusing tech tree
I always keep losing games after turn 400 beacuse the AI have done a building victory, beacuse the tech tree is so confusing, I can't really tell what is a unit, a building or a wonder when playing without mods or playing online so i can't find the stuff i should be researching in time before the AI does

It's a bit unintuitive and takes a while to learn. I was struggling with it a bit as well until I decided to take some time on the Civilopedia to figure what I want and how to get it. Some better color coding would be in order. I believe there's a mod for that, but the achievement hunters don't like to use mods.

If you zoom in a little, it has a description. It will usually say if its a Unit. And then there is of course the in game Encyclopedia which contains information on everything in quite the detail. you access it via the question mark in the top right.

Also there are filters which let you filter for improvements. And there is the quest tab, which not only lists all victory conditions and what you gotta do for them, but also shows the progress of each nation towards the victory (there is a little progress bar beneath their icons)

And you are appraised of someone building a Wonder or a Victory Condition. All you gotta do is read the victory conditions and then use the search field (top left, next to the filters) in the tech tree (it even has an auto complete function so you only have to type a few letters) to find the tech you need.

Between the Search in the Techtree and the Quest log, you should have all the information you need.

Not sure if serious.... its not that hard guys. Don't expect the game to play itself for you. If you want that, watch a Let's play or a movie.

I actually made a small guide where I try to show how you can see which is which. Might be helpful to you. (It's on Steam since yesterday, you should be able to find it easily)

Use a tech tree colour mod from the workshop. Use the filters in the top left. Try the following when researching by asking yourself:

"What do I want to do? Buildings, units, resources, health, etc."

Then see what is in reach. You have to think more about what you are going to research and build.

It took me some time to get familiar with it. The unit's name changes when they are upgraded but their icon stays the same from the beginning. Each Affinity has three unique units with their own special icon. After a few games winning each Victory condition a couple times through each Affinity I find it easy to spot which techs are needed to gather resources, which are needed towards Victory, and which contain each Orbital Unit. The quests which require a certain structure to be built help with familiarizing the Tech Tree. Of course I couldn't state which any of them contain by name from memory, yet.

Try using the filters and search options in the tech screen. There's a victory filter that shows tech path progression for each non-conquest victory.

And this is why games get dumbed down to the ground.

Yes it is confusing the first time you open the tech web especially when you got used to the past Civ tech trees but seriously how hard is it to zoom in, hover the mouse over the icons to see what it is and if needed check in the Civilopedia?

The first thing I have done was checking each and every technology to plan in advance those that I needed.

Just use this free mod - Colorful Tech Web. U can find this in workshop. This is VERY USEFUL thing. And its working well.
to people talking about mods i can't use mods when playing online with friends so that doesn't really help the issue

Im with you bro. I hate tech tree, is not user friendly. Everytime I go there I spent 30 min for searching, then I have to read civipedia, then go back to tree, search again. Seriously, I hope developers will fix this soon. Now it is annoying.

Pardon my English.

I preferred the linear tech tree. Having to scroll around and around in circles to find what things does is pretty annoying. With the linear tree I could see exactly what was next and what branch I needed to take.
