Why cant i find my item box button

seriously i have hit every button while in game and nothing seems to open the item box itself. my character is sitting there with no gear on because i vcant figure out how to equip... wondering if something is bugged. i checked all the keymapping and nothing says anything about item box, and hitting i brings up my shadowed figure with inventory greyed out at the top
