I have only unlocked two alternate character progenies so far, and I would almost prefer they were just recolors. They don't seem substantially different, but some are almost strictly worse it seems. For instance, I unlocked a Red Aegis variant which switches her flurry attack to level 6 and fortress to level 8, this is basically a strictly worse Aegis as getting flurry adds basically nothing to her kit while gaining fortress is huge. I like the color but will literally never use that progeny, so I kinda just wish they kept it as a pure recolor.
If we want to talk about making the progeny system more engaging I feel like each progeny should take an aspect of each parent. So a Sabo/Aegis progeny Aegis should get some form of stun or AOE in her kit, or a Paragon/Aegis progeny Aegis switches the ability to use gauntlets for swords or something. I want something that actually changes the way I play the hero, and Im not sure the current system does that.
i know the aegis you unlocked, a real stinker i would say. but the respective sabo out of that double unlock is a bit more offensive with a heavy attack skill and the aoe stagger at lvl 2.. changes quite a bit how you can play. nothing to major but still.
Along the lines of balancing changes and upcoming content theres hopefully something a bit more.
That being said, I agree that having the variations "borrow" one of the skills from their non-model parent class would've been a really cool concept.
EDIT: Actually, it's funny that you trashed on the Red Aegis variant, because I actually prefer her to the normal version as I like getting her flurry attack so she can have some offense that doesn't use up stagger counts.
Conversely, I find a lot of situations where you might want to use Fortress will often end up getting her killed (or nearly killed), whereas you could just block with everyone, NOT almost die, and move on with your life.
It really comes down to personal preference and playstyle, which is a sign of good game design.
Im glad to hear that the Sabo is better. Im still working on getting the new classes so I haven't spent much on hero swaps, but the Aegis I did unlock really dampened my excitement to buy any of them.
From my experience, most of the progeny do have significant changes to move closer to their other parent.
Maybe my comment about the red aegis backfired a bit, she's like you said, usefull in the staggering regard and fortress is often a suicide, so in and by herself, she's not bad, just seems like a lackluster that theres nothing aside from a skillswap in her kit that makes a difference when others offer a almost completly different skillset.
It really depends what buld you going for. I don't use fortress on my Aegis as it's normally suicide.
Advantage of Flurry is on-hit life- or shield-steal, as well as no stagger, so you don't waste a stagger point for a low stagger move. Instead the staggerpoint can be used by another char with high stagger attack.
