For me I do barn repairs when starting out as the cars are in better shape and after fixing them back to 100% and resaleing the car I save the parts that cant be repaired to use on customer cars like the bushings brakes and shocks.
If you get a junkyard car with really bad frame and body, you can make quick cash by welding and cleaning the interior (total cost $1100), then selling the car without doing any further work, except perhaps repairing existing panels.
I usually buy all barn cars. If i like them or want it in my collection i fix it up to 100%. If i dont really care for it i will do quick fixes and sell them.
Auction only if i want a car for the collection. Mostly overpay there.
Junkyard sells you absolute wrecks so the margins can be good if you can fix them on the cheap
Auction sells newer and higher value cars but good luck ever paying under the true value and they are minimum of 3star quality. Only up side is the higher value cars are worth a lot more when repaired.
Personally feel ALL cars should appear in the junkyard (people do crash new cars ya know) but just with older cars being more likely/
