Riven (1997)
Does the game have a lot of bugs?
I remember playing this game as a kid, back when it was on half a dozen discs or so, and really liked it. Never finished it though because it was so buggy and would always freeze up and couldn't go past a certain point. So does this version have any of the same issues? It seems like a pretty good deal at 6 bucks, but I don't really want to waste my time if its going to be the same issues and I can finish the game.

It can run in Windows 7 with compatibility mode and admin rights. I've encountered frequent game freezes and crashes; annoying especially if you don't save often. If you've never played it and just have to play it now, $4 is a good deal.

Personally, I would recommend you hold out until Starry Expanse finishes their remodeling of the complete game with the Unreal Development Kit ... only problem with that is it will be years in the making if it ever releases at all; it's been about 5 years in development already and not 1 island has been finished on it.
Thanks for the heads up. Yea, I don't know if I want to deal with freezing and crashing again. I have played it, but I saw it on here and it's been a while, so I thought if they improved it, why not. I didn't know about the remake in progress, I guess I'll just wait for now and hope that it comes out some day before I die, lol.

That's exactly how I feel about it. :D
I've been playing it on Win 8 and it occasionally freezes, but not too often. If you save frequently (which is easier on this version) you shouldn't find it too painful. I've not needed to set it up with compatibility or anything. The only real issue is that clicking on book pages often turns two pages, but there's a solution to that detailed here: http://www.gog.com/forum/myst_series/riven_book_problems
Nice SP avatar.

I play Riven all the time with the GOG version on Win 7 x64 and have had zero (0) issues to this date. I've heard the Steam version is buggy. Try it from GOG http://www.gog.com/game/riven_the_sequel_to_myst as like others have said, the steam version may give you issues.

It really is a classic and one of, if not the most phenomenal game ever made.

The Steam version has a nasty freeze bug caused by the OS automatically trying to multiprocess the movie clips -- they appear to be run by a separate Quicktime process, and signals between the processes get lost if they're not on the same core when they expect to be.

It can be prevented by alt-tabbing out at the title screen, bringing up Task Manager, right-click -> Set Affinity on Riven.exe, and making sure only one CPU is checked. If you're comfortable with making batch files, you can throw together a two-liner to set affinity and then run the Riven executable from the Steam folder, then use that to start the game from then on (if you played Penny Arcade's Rainslick Precipice 2, you probably needed the same fix).

You're supposed to be able to set affinity from Steam's launch properties too, but it doesn't seem to actually apply.

That's the only bug I ran into on the Steam version, and it's local to the hardware and OS rather than the Steam wrapper specifically.

My problem is that it won't let me progress past a certain point. (Spoiler warning) I've got to the part where I have to power up Gehn's linking books and it's not working at all. I've confimed absolutely for certain that I've got the puzzle right with the fire marbles, but the linking books are still not showing any signs of working. Also, it won't let me turn the lights on in the tunnel behind the prison on the village island. Any suggestions?
I have the same problem as Sambob. I know for sure I have the fire marbles in the right spot but when I press the white button it doesn't make the rumbling sound and the books stay unpowered.
I've contacted Cyan Worlds about it but had no reply at all. :/

I have heard that the Steam version is just very buggy - Don't know if the one on GOG is any better...

(Spoiler Alert)

Also, the part of the game that allows you to link to Tay is broken (Can't go back up the tunnel from the prison above the lake - it just goes straight back to the top without letting me walk though the tunnel)
This can be circumvented by not going to the very end of the tunnel, just stop one slide before that. Then you can make a 180° turn and switch on the lights, then go back.

I think a lot of things being complained about are not bugs. Just look for the game walkthrough somewhere for the exact procedure if you are stuck.
