No way to 2 vs 2?

Hi, I just bought the game with the DLC's and was wondering if there's a way for 2 vs 2 Co-Op.
I am thinking of gifting a 2nd copy to my girlfriend but she's a sore loser so we definitely need something with solid Co-Op.

I know that there is a Co-Op mode, but it seems like it's only about collecting gold together in order to break score records and earn medals, but I suspect we'll quickly tire of that game mode if there are no other dragons to compete against?! (Even if they're just CPUs).

Any way to make that work? Can you make teams in treasure mode or something?
