Glados is Chell's mom, how Ratman's behind it, why Wheatley helps us in the beginning and more
*MAJOR SPOILERS* Okay, I have a theory about Portal. It takes a while to explain so let's start at the beginning. We already know that Glados kills all the scientists in Aperture with Neurotoxin before the events of Portal 1 or 2 even take place. We also know that Ratman survived Glados's genocide. Finally, we know that that Caroline was forced against her will to become Cave Johnson's replacement as Glados. Glados has no memory of being Caroline in Portal 1 and most of Portal 2. We are never explained why Glados killed all the scientists. Why did she kill all the scientists? Why does Glados not remember being Caroline?

Here is what happened. After Caroline is turned into Glados and immediately exacts revenge on all Aperture employees EXCEPT for Chell and Ratman. It is established thoughout the games in Ratman dens that Ratman was once an Aperture employee who survived Glados wrath and hides from her. Chell, on the other hand, is spared because she is Caroline's daughter.

What evidence is there? In Portal 2 there is a "Bring Your Daughter To Work Day". There are multiple Science Fair Projects there made by the daughters of the employees. One of these projects says "By: Chell". Assuming this Chell is the same Chell in the Portal series, this proves Chell is the daughter of one of the staff at Aperture science. Later in Portal 2, after Glados learns she is an AI based off of Caroline, she becomes motherly defensive of Chell. After Wheatley insults Chell's lack of parents, an insult Glados had previously made up, Glados then counters Wheatley by saying that there is nothing wrong with being an orphan and that Chell is NOT fat. Before she learned she was Caroline, Glados would have NEVER defended Chell, having a deep hatred of her prior to learning she is her mom (sort of). Also, in the credits song, Glados says Chell is a lot like Caroline. Perhaps this hints at a like mother like daughter comparison Glados is making?

Anyway, Ratman escapes and hatches a plan to free Chell. He knows if Glados knows she is Caroline, and therefore knows Chell is her daughter, she would never let her leave. HOWEVER, if he simply kills glados, Aperture would collapse and kill Chell and Ratman. So he erases Caroline's personality from Glados. Glados then confusedly finds a small child, not knowing why she's there, and raises her to be a test subject. Ratman bides his time and scowers Aperture, leaving clues for Chell to find. When the time is right and she begins testing, she would follow the messages left for her by Ratman. She learns of Ratman erasing Glados's memory. If Chell tells Glados that she is Caroline, her and Ratman's escape plan would be foiled. This explains why Chell is mute in the first game.

In the events of the first game, Ratman is killed presumably during the events of the game. Glados discovers that Chell is following Ratman's advice, and kills him. This is why he is not present at the end of the game to escape with Chell. HOWEVER, before he died, he realized his plan might fail because of his death and created a Plan B. During his time exploring Aperture, he finds Wheatley and tells him to help Chell out of Aperture.

This explains WHY Wheatley helps you in the beginning of Portal 2 in the first place. Wheatley, being a core designed for stupidity, wakes up Chell WAY later than he was supposed to. Chell has amnesia because of her long slumber and therefore remembers nothing of Glados being Caroline, the death of all Aperture scientists and so on. She also has brain damage, which explains why she cannot talk in the second game.

In the events of the second game, Glados discovers she is Caroline (basically) and that Chell was her daughter. She becomes more protective and loving torwards Chell. At the end of the game, she says that she deletes Caroline. This is a lie. She lies about deleting Caroline and withholds that she is basically her robotic mother because she knows Chell would not leave if she knew this. Out of motherly love, she lets Chell go.

What do you guys think? Do you agree with this theory? Object? What re your theories?

Excellent theory man. Check out my theory on the portal 1 forum and give me your opinions. It's basically my theory on the ENTIRE timeline. Leave a comment for me.
great theory

I very much enjoy these theorys, and this one is pretty solid, though Glados would be a pretty terrible mother in the end haha.
While GLaDOS may act motherly at some points in the game, Caroline could not be Chell's mom because a certain biological factor prevents it. Maybe Caroline knew her, but she could not be her biological mother. This is a rather well thought out theory, though.
I concur, awesome theory. :D

Sounds correct, but Caroline adopted Chell. During the same scene you referred to where Glados becomes defensive of Chell, after Wheatly says she is adopted and Glados says "What's wrong with be adopted," Glados actually tells Chell that she really is adopted. How could Glados know that than to have adopted her herself.

Huh. I never noticed that. That sounds about right

Did you read the portal 2 comic? Cause some ( or maybe most) of the theory parts don't match or just sounds silly, especially the Ratman ones. But the start question about why did GlaDOS killed everyone in the start is interesting.
What theorries I got is a) as Carolines personality was putted inside GlaDOS, so was the hatred against such people was putted as well as she didn't wanted to be put inside it. b) The itch - in portal 2 "the itch" is to do testing and if GlaDOS didn't killed all those people, she wouldn't be able to test as she would be restricted of her power. and she doesn't care about humans.

Interesting theory but from the information from the game, comic and wiki, I have to say your theory ain't that good.
Its no secret theory that Caroline and Cave Johnson had Chell, in fact, in the achievement "Portrait of a Hidden Lady", you can see Caroline does resemble Chell. And the science project isnt a secret either. In fact, there's a legible version of the project on the internet saying that her dad told her that the person who ordered all the surplus potatoes would probably be fired. {LINK ENTFERNT} She is adopted, and GLaDOS knows this because she and Cave Johnson gave her to one of the scientists at Aperture. She didn't know Chell was hers until she realized she was Caroline. When GLaDOS says there are two people registered at Aperture with her last name, that was Cave Johnson and Caroline. Also, if you listen to the turrets song at the end, you'll find its in italian. But theres an english sub version that proves Chell is GLaDOS' daughter. It's very obvious and sad.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4_WSMEQiiY Ratman had nothing to do with it, he was just a fellow scientist that worked with Chell's adopted father who just happened to show up on "Take Your Daughter To Work Day." He noted Chell's tenacity was of a high level. Then, the neurotoxins happened and Chell's adopted father died. Survivors were taken as test subjects. Chell wasn't supposed to be test subject #1, she was number 1498. In fact, she was rejected as a test subject because her tenacity level was above 99%. But Ratman snuck in and changed it because he knew she would never give in to GLaDOS and eventually defeat her.
