Crash To Desktop - Possible Fix

For about a year I've experienced the crash to desktop bug. I'd get to the splash screen and then ... crash. Portal 2 worked for awhile when I first bought it and I loved the game, but then this damn bug occurred and I've been sans Portal 2 since. Tried all the fixes listed and Steam Support was nice but had no solutions either. Totally unrelated, I use Malware Bytes to scan for viruses and noticed they had a "Rootkit" scan now available so downloaded and ran it the other day. I had a bunch of virus and malware that never was detected previously. Completed the scan and removed all the bad stuff. Then today my son (who is also a big Portal 2 fan) starts up Portal 2 expecting it to crash ... but to our delight it's now working! We played all day - wahooooo! In short, I have no proof but I'm connecting the rootkit scan and fixes to Portal 2 working again. If you're like me and have had no luck with any of the other fixes, give Malware Bytes a try and download the Rootkit scan. PS - I'm running Windows XP.

Un-install and then re-install thats help me before but who knows
