Portal 2 Extremely Laggy!
Ok, so I bought Portal 2, installed it, ran it and it's insanely laggy. Even in the menu it takes several seconds to select anything. If I start a game I see maybe one frame every five or six seconds. My computer is pretty decent too. I have a Intel Q6600 (2.4ghz quad core), Radeon HD 4850X2 and 8 gigs of ram.

Edit: All drivers are up to date.

2.4 GHz is the problem. Yes, I know Quad cores can fix that, but in this case no. Portal 2 requirements state that you it's RECOMENDED to use 3.0 GHz, I use 3.2, used to play Portal 2 on a 2.9, so it has to be your Processer.

It's not the processor, the game runs fine on my friends computer and he has the exact same processor, his video card isn't as good as mine and he only has 4 gigs of ram. This isn't a hardware not being good enough issue, there is something else going on here.

The RECOMENDED is a 3ghz Pentium 4. Yes my processor is 2.4 ghz but it's able to push out more calculations per cycle per core. Frequency is just that, frequency. If a processor is 50 ghz but can only put out one calculation per cycle it's not nearly as fast as a 1 ghz processor that can do 200 calculations per cycle.

its because its new to your computer. it did that to me with Gmod, TF2, and Minecraft.
the lag will be gone in a day or to or untill your computer is used to running it

Actually, he's not trolling, when I first bought Black Ops II it ran sh!itty for me. But like, a few days (2 - 4) after it ran like a game that was made in the mid 90's on an Alienware. And in that case, it's REALLY good. Same with portal 2. My computer was sh!it with it at first, like a day after it was fine.

Hmm, what resolution are you running the game in? I notice a huge framerate drop on 1080p compared to 720p on my PC.

Well, I haven't been able to get to video settings because the menu is laggy, but I think it's running at native which is 1680x1050. But the amount of lag I'm getting is indicating an issue that isn't just performance. A frame every 6 seconds isn't a hardware issue, that's something weird going on.

I ran portal 2 on the Q6600 just fine. I had a gtx 460, and 4GB's of crappy DDR2 RAM. I was able to have the graphics options all on the highest setting, and a smooth 60fps. My monitor runs at a resolution of 1366 x 768

GHz doesn't tell the whole story. Some processors can do more work per processor cycle than others.
