Can't get voice chat working

I've been trying to play portal 2 with a friend, we can use steam voice chat fine, but the in game chat won't work.

We both have open microphone set, but I can't hear him (although he can hear me).

We'd just use the steam voice chat, as that works, but the game disables it.

Anyone know how to disable or fix the in game voice chat?

Disable as in stop the game from grabbing the mic, simply choosing 'disabled' doesn't do that.

My vioce chat always screeches. Very annoying.

Always worked for me. If error remains: Use Skype & Co. while playing the game.

Same problem. My friend can't hear me, but i can hear him. We tried all settings and nothing has changed.

Same. This worked for me until multiple mics were detected. Try disconnecting other mics
