Portal 2 shuts down after trying to do anything past the main menu

I can't play Portal 2 at all. Every time I try clicking play it starts to load then it shuts down.

What do you mean by "Right click on the library"?

Right click on Portal 2 in the library sidebar (if you're in list view), then go to Properties (the last item on the list), go to Local Files, and around the lower box of the box there should be a button that says "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" or something like that.

What is curious to me is that people who have a problem, the first thing they do is IMMEDIATELY post a new thread BEFORE seeing if anyone else might have had the same problem. And as you can see there are now about 10 similar threads on the first page, about half of them solved by verifying game cache... I'm not trying to back-seat-moderate here, but seriously people, use your eyes.

Also Eetami I had already found several other fourms that said to do that but some people said it did nothing.

Yeah, well... Here are some guidelines to troubleshooting
1) Verify game cache
2) Restart computer
3) Check everything is up to date
4) Go to Steam Support
5) Enter forums and SEARCH
6) Ask a question.
