Crashing

When I open the game it will show the valve logo and start going to the main loading screen and then it will crash. It says portal2.exe has stopped working.

In your library, right-click on Portal 2. Go to Properties > Set Launch Options.

Type in:
-windowed -w 1280 -h 720 -dxlevel 70

Click OK > Close.

Now start Portal 2 and see what happens. If it runs with those changes, then it was a problem with your resolution/graphics settings and the capibilities of your graphics card.

You can adjust resoultion in game under options (then be sure to take the resoultion settings out of the launch options). You can only set dx level through launch options, and it can be 70, 80, or 90 depending on your graphics card (dx7, dx8, or dx9).

You can also try Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache...

I have a similar problem. When I start it up it won't go to the Valve logo before crashing. It never leaves Windows before showing the "portal2.exe has stopped working" window. I already tried what you suggested above (verify integrity, set launch options).

I've been able to play the game before all of this happened, and I haven't change anything except maybe Windows updates. Think you might be able to help?

i recently fixed my problem (lasted over a year) by uninstalling all my workshop items that i had subscribed to for portal. deleting the portal 2 folder in the "common" folder. Then reinstalling the game.
