Having Trouble getting the Game to Run?
Hi,

Some people are experiencing difficulty getting the game to run on more recent operating systems. This pinned discussion is here to help.

Please follow the instructions below to see if these resolve any issues you are having.
Also, please let us know if these steps have helped you resolve the issue or not. The goal is to update this how2 so it can help more people in future.

After installing the game on Win10:
  1. Open the folder in which AoW is installed. To accomplish this: right-click the game in your steam library, select 'Properties', switch to the 'LOCAL FILES' tab and click the 'BROWSE LOCAL FILES...' button.
  2. Right click 'AoWSetup.exe', select 'Properties', switch to the 'Compatibility' tab, toggle the 'Compatibility mode' checkbox and set the mode to 'Windows XP (Service Pack 2)'.
  3. While in the 'Compatibility' tab also check the 'Run this program as an administrator' option, click 'Apply' and then click 'Ok' to close the screen.
  4. Double click 'AoWSetup.exe' in the folder. This will launch the AoWSetup application. Windows will prompt you asking if you trust us, to which I suggest answering with 'Yes'.
  5. In the setup click the 'Settings' tab, set the 'Startup Video Mode' to 'Window' and press 'Ok'.
  6. This brings you back to the setup application where you click 'Play!' to start the game.
  7. In the game, click the left most button with the crossed swords that is labelled 'Scenario'. This should trigger a windows prompt stating you miss 'Direct Play'. Please install 'Direct Play' as suggested.
  8. When installation is completed. Exit the game.
  9. Right click 'AoWSetup.exe', select 'Properties', switch to the 'Compatibility' tab, toggle the 'Compatibility mode' checkbox and set the mode to 'Windows7', click 'Apply' and then click 'Ok' to close the screen.
  10. That's configuration done.
  11. To launch the game press 'Play' from the Steam library, select 'Configuration' to start the setup application and press 'Play!' to start the game.

Note that:
  • If the steps above still result in an installation that throws errors, please uninstall the game and repeat the steps above on a fresh installation.
  • You can set AoW.exe to run as administrator to allow you to start the game using 'Play Age of Wonders' instead of having to do the extra click going through 'Configuration'.
  • We were able to set the game to run full screen in the setup tool after going through the above configuration.

Also note that:
  • Diego96 advices 'disabling "Direct Input Sound" in the configuration menu' because it 'fixed many of the crashes'. Thanks for sharing Diego96.

To manually install DirectPlay on Windows 10
  • Goto Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features
  • Click on Trun Windows features on or off
  • Enable Legacy Components -> DirectPlay
  • and Press OK

If you are still on Win7:
  • Step 7 will not prompt you to install Direct Play. To activate Direct Play please follow the steps on in the 'Answer' on this page[answers.microsoft.com].

Here's the patch. Just open the zip file, run the .exe inside, and point it at ILPACK.DLL in your AoW installation folder (it will try to locate it automatically from registry, but if that doesn't work, you'll need to look it up yourself).

I couldn't get past step 6 where I select aowsetup.exe and play the game because it just says install or exit not play. When I select install it asks for the disk which I don't have since I bought it through steam. I tried deleting all files of the game and repeating each step but it brings me to the same result.

Sorry I meant step 5. Once I try to open aowsetup.exe it asks yes or no if I'd allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to my device so I say yes and it bring me to a menu asking to install aow or exit.

@onearmbandit2 Age of Wonders 1 stores it setting in the registry. If you get a Setup install screen (instead of a Setup Settings screen) after installing the game this means somehow its settings didn't got written to the Windows registry.

Can you find the following Key with settings in the Windows Registry?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Triumph Studios\Age of Wonders

(Open command prompt with admin priv. for this and enter regedit.exe )

As to the cause of this, my first hunch is the installation wasn't correct or that an external program is interfering with the game from writing to the registry.

So you might want to reinstall the game and if this doesn't work, check if any external program like Anti-Virus is interfering.

So I deleted and reinstalled the game following the steps given previously a few times now and finally got through all of them. Only now the game crashes anywhere between day 10 and day 30 saying there's a compatability issue and that the program needs to close. There's no error code that I saw it just says compatability issue press ok to close program.

Well, at least that's progress.

Did you not have the request for the disk when you did the reinstall, or did you make some changes in the game's registry to resolve that issue?

And, any hiccups while going through the steps above, or was it smooth sailing until the compatibility issue appeared?

Also, if you can post a screenshot of that message that might help us overcome this next hurdle. My guess would be that this is a windows popup and that there is still something amiss with the compatibility settings.

I'm running Win10 - mostly default settings - on a similar resolution and have no trouble running AoW windowed while typing this. End turned my way up to turn 40. So it seems its either system or system settings.

I kept getting the error "Excepition during MapViewer.*****Scan" every time I started a scenario, after playing some stages of campaign, tried to use your fix, but Direct Play was already ok, did through dxdiag, now the game just crashes. reinstalled it, and it doesn't work. Running on a Wi10 Dell notebook, 16gb RAM, 2gb Radeon GPU. Don't know what to do to make game run again. please help.

Did you do all the steps when trying this?

To verify, at step 7 you didn't get the DirectPlay prompt. But you started DXDiag to verify if DirectPlay was enabled and it was?

To verify, after going through the steps the game started crashing earlier. Can you give some more information on when it crashes? And, when you reinstalled you did 'remove local content' on Steam, reinstalled via Steam and then went through all the steps again?

Based on the current information, all I can suggest is do a reinstall, going though the steps meticulously. But perhaps the answers to the above questions can help us narrow down the issue.

Hi !
I'm on windows 7 !
I have a problem just like onearmbandit2, when I launch setup, I can only install or exit.
I found the mentioned key "Age of Wonders" at the mentioned place...
So what to do now ?

I deleted a few times the game and cleaned the registry manually as completely as I could but the result is always the same.

@Mykepatch Need a little more info to go on. Following the guide, at which step it goes wrong?
Mykepatch Jan 3, 2017 @ 5:35am
Well, in fact, I had a problem yesterday, when I tried your procedure, after launching AoWSetup.exe, there were only two choices: install or exit. Install asked for disk...
Now I just relaunched it, and I had the different tabs. I selected settings, then window, and OK, according to step 5.
I controlled with dxdiag that all functionalities of directx is active, then I clicked Play !
The window opens with game buttons, but crashes after 1 or 2 seconds without any message, it just disappears, like it does in full screen.

Strange, but you selected in the setup 'Settings' tab, the set the 'Startup Video Mode' to 'Window'?
Mykepatch Jan 3, 2017 @ 6:00am
Yes, and the game opens windowed, but crashes just after opening !
Arnout  [developer] Jan 3, 2017 @ 6:38am
What kind of compatability mode settings do you have for AoW.exe ?
Mykepatch Jan 3, 2017 @ 6:42am
I tried with no compatibilty mode, with the same as AoWSetup.exe, and with win95 98 NT4 ... same problem !

For information, if it can help:
- in october, I could log in my Steam account and play AoW without any change on a portable computer with Windows 7 Family Edition Premium, lended by a friend.
- AoW Shadow Magic functions correctly (as far as I tried until now) without change on my computer. (windows 7 complete edition)
