Destroying Capital ships?

I used to have this game as a kid and I have 2 things to say that have always puzzled me about this game. 1 is how often do CPUs play as heroes? (I've only ever seen it happen once the very first time i played the game on an Xbox). Second is can you destroy the Captial ships? they have health bars and one of my friend claimed to have destroyed one when I was younger. I dont think I believe him

there is a mod to enable bots (AI/CPUs) play as heroes.
as for destroying capital ships,there is an assault mode in space which you destroy their life support,communications array,command bridge,sensor array,engines,etc as well as frigates and the fighters themselves. not sure if you mean THAT.

nah what i meant is if it's possible to blow the entire ship up, because they seem to have health bars.

no. what they have is shields.
