Upscaling won't do anything with what appear to be a massive CPU bottleneck. Even if it wasn't a CPU bottleneck, I shouldn't have to use upscaling on this game with a 2080s. Game only uses 60% of my GPU.
What I did was I tried to reduce the CPU bottleneck by essentially keeping my textures and everything on high/extreme and then turning down stuff that is more "CPU intensive" like environmental clutter and destruction debris. I also found turning this game on borderless for some reason instead of fullscreen gives me a tad bit better framerate which is strange (try this to see if it works). I don't really notice the latency with borderless. These settings sorta helped reaching 60fps. What is even more annoying is that I switched from my 1080p monitor to my 4k one and the framerate is the exact same.
You get used to the awful framerate though, not really much you can do, I seen on reddit and the discord that getting 40-60fps is the norm in this game.
That's kind of.. unacceptable for a game with this graphical fidelity. I guess it is what it is.
Yeah I know its really annoying. This game is a prime example of having a good singlethreaded CPU regardless of what GPU you buy. For a 2018 CPU, I noticed the 9700k is still holding strong in most games. I run BF2042 surprisingly better than this game and the bottleneck isn't as severe. I wish this game was more optimized for hardware but 150 players does take a huge toll. The more you play this game, the more you get used to the bad performance.
I suppose it's the engine they picked to create the game on. I guess Unity, which I typically think terrible of anyways, can't really do these large-scale multiplayer style games. Most Unity games run like garbage...
At least the trend of never releasing Unity engine early access survival games of 2012-2018 is over.
You realize that when you play on GeForce Now you are playing off someone elses computer right?
Yes. But i would have thought on an og Xbox One....on their browser, and thru Steam, and then thru Ge Froce Now i'd be playing a slide show at 480p and 10fps. But that's not the case.
And so my view is, if i'm able to get the result i did playing on old machine, and browser, and running thru all those hoops, someone on a decent PC would fare better. But i guess not. Try it on GE Force Now and see how you fare out maybe. You can get it free.
Regardless of how bad you can make the game look, on high end systems the bottleneck will always be CPU, which is why I encourage people to bump their graphical settings up.
There are only a few CPU based options that you can look into changing. The main one will be ragdoll corpses, which is located at the bottom of game settings, possibly some shadows. Turning off environmental clutter may help you on some maps, as we usually put environmental particle effects in this setting for people to turn off, though this setting will also turn off other small 3d object based objects that have no collision which can make some maps look more empty.
Myself I run on a 3080 and 10700k and 60FPS for me on full frontlines maps is a blessing, nations at war on the other hand can easily run between 60-90 fps depending on the map in full servers just simply because there is way less going on in the game due to the slower paced nature of NaW
edit: just to add not in 4k. RES is: 1920X1080. I'm sure If I tried to go higher I'd have to turn settings down. I also shoot for 60 FPS, not 90. With those parameters the game runs flawless for me.
