How do I trigger the extra damage from The Boy's Axe?

I have tried but for whatever reason can't get the extra damage / callback to trigger on this weapon. After hitting the initial target and pressing attack again it just throws more axes at the target. I can't call it back! What am I doing wrong??

you should only have one (or two, with ammo) axes. With one, it's a simple of matter of hitting your attack to throw, and then again to recall it.

With ammo, it gets a little weird. You'll have to throw both, as I recall, to recall any.

I feel like I've tried every approach I can think of... keyboard or controller it's the same. I land the first throw, which roots the enemy and gives a yellow glow effect. Then I hit the attack key again, and it just throws another axe into the enemy. No matter how many times I press attack it just keeps throwing axes but never recalls. Could this be a bug? Thanks for the fast response by the way.

Are you playing on custom mode with unlimited ammo modifier?
I know it's a dumb question, but it's a possibility.

You know what, it turns out that was the exact issue. . . thanks so much for that! I can now enjoy the item as intended

Yep, as I mentioned, additional ammo will mess with the general mechanics of Boy's Axe.

Of course, I had no clue that there even was an infinite ammo option in custom, but... yep, that'd do it.
