Real world connections
I found it interesting how the novel kept things vague enough to get you thinking about what really happened and where, while at the same time casually dropped some critical info here and there in very small doses. This made me keep notes, and here's what I was able to deduce. Obviously, spoilers inbound, don't read if you haven't finished the novel yet.

What's the time frame?
Sachiko and Takako were born around 1970, they're around 32 for most of the game, making it the early 2000's. Which makes sense given the level of technology (bulky PC's with CRT monitors, CRT TV's, no/few mobile phones, radio and newspapers being popular).
Reasons: They're 28 at the time of Takako's death (the scene shown at the very start of the novel), and it's been 4 years since then according to Narasaki's diagram. The dates are from Sachiko's diary.

Where are the girls from?
Oita prefecture on Kyushu, the actual town is probably Beppu.
Reasons: Takako mentions yaseuma being her favorite childhood snack and it's a local speciality from Oita, later Narasaki says she's from Kyushu and her hometown is famous for hot springs, which again should be Oita.

Where is the mansion/sanatorium?
Hyogo prefecture in Kansai within a walking distance from Sakuradai, which makes the port city either Himeji, Akashi or Kobe. I'm not familiar with the area myself, maybe somebody else can identify it from the photos used in the novel.

What foreign countries have Sachiko and Takako been to?
Taiwan (Taipei), Italy (Rome), USA (San Francisco: Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge)
