Assassin's Creed Origins
Curious about Denuvo and its efficiency.
So I'm not thoroughly educated in DRM and have never really bothered to care until now. With all the threads and speculation pointing to DRM as the cause for the heavy CPU usage. I'm not trying to fan the flames of the current pro-drm/anti-drm war that is currently ensuing. But I can't help but wonder, has DRM (Denuvo or others) ever actually stopped a game from being pirated? I kind of feel like DRM is the digital age form of snake oil. If its never actually worked before, why do devs even bother to pay $$$ to use it? especially if it really does impact performance, which I truly am not educated enough about DRM to say whether or not thats the case.

Disclaimer: I do not by any means condone piracy, as you can tell by my robust library of games, I pay for my games and support developers (For better or worse).

short story, its impossible to stop a game being cracked in the end drm is a piece of code, it will eventually be reverse engineered
Right now it's a tollbooth.

The developers know it'll be defeated, but getting those week one sales by all the players whom have to have it NOW, is the biggest draw to using it.

I guess that does make sense from a sales standpoint.
It makes it harder to pirate, or at least it did. But Denuvo its self is pretty thoroughly cracked - that's why ubisoft added an extra layer of obfuscation, making it harder for crackers to see what denuvo is actually doing in this iteration.

It is silly to say that DRM doesn't impact performance whatsoever, but it also silly to pin all of the performance issues at the feet of DRM. It really depends on the DRM - from what we know about denuvo it isn't that bad in terms of resource usage. But the issue today is that Ubi have also added VMProtect on top of Denuvo to make cracking harder, but also causes more CPU usage in the process (how much of an impact it is having is wildly being debated).

Why they are using it? Because they are convinced that is does impact sales in the first week or two. If you can avoid being cracked in the first month then the theory is, you should get the most money possible. Of course whether or not it is worth it is debatable. It's pretty hard to determine which purchases are from someone who would have otherwise not bought it and just pirated it.

There is also the end goal of getting to the point in which games are not really crackable. The best way to do that is to keep experimenting, even though we know there is one really good way - and that is to require always online and have the server control most of the in game triggers while the client knows as little as possible about what is going on. Doing that is obviously more expensive, and can piss customers off quite easily if they don't have good internets.

Wonder what they'll do if people realize this and just stop buying games at launch week ?

Because right now all drm does for me is just tell me not to buy at launch and wait for the game to be cracked so I can then buy a drm free legit copy.

the game is f*cking great, so I can forgive them for this, it would be nice if they lifted DRM at some point, or improved the performance in some way later though

Personally, the game runs butter smooth for me on i7 and 980ti, save for some 1-2 second lag spikes that happen every once in an hour or so. But if so many people are complaining about DRM screwing over their fps, then there must be something wrong with it.
Either that, or it's a well planned out conspiracy by pirates to force ubisoft to lift DRM so they can crack it easier lmao
To be honest I don't why they didn't just carry on with trigger switches like the anti-glide cape in batman if the copy was cracked. Nice simple switch that doesn't even come into play for legit copy's and only affects cracked copy's, rather than making everyone suffer.

I like to see multiplayer cheaters suffer myself. Because while a pirate doesn't affect a legitimate customer in any way what so ever (except to improve their game if the company get rid of the DRM when it's cracked - oh, and those guys cutting their teeth in hacking games have an extraordinary overlap in the people who defeat the large scale virus' and hacks) where-as a multiplayer cheater ruins the game for everone he comes into contact with.

How's that VAC ban going!

Found a mad pirate. Sorry you can't pirate the game :^)

Stop ruining video games, why do PC gamers always get punished over console gamers.

Im sorry but then why does your in-game performance tracker consider 30FPS are low performance. 40 is considered stable and above is good or whatever. We all know 30 fps isn't the best..Don't get me wrong the game looks stunning and i'm really enjoying it but there is defo something up with the performance here and there is something you guys arnt telling us

How was this tested and how was the impact to performance calculated? Are you willing to disclose how often VMP calls are triggered and how much CPU utlization the calls use when they are made? At what level does Ubisoft consider the impact of these things as "perceptible"?

Thanks
"while ensuring a steady 30 FPS performance." - :steamfacepalm:

A steady and cinematic 30 frames per second.
