Old Man’s Journey is played entirely with your mouse. For the majority of the journey, you’ll be rearranging roads and hills and even train tracks to ensure that the Old Man gets to where he needs to go, pausing occasionally to click on or hover over people and creatures that will react to you interference.

Because it is such a story heavy game, it’s difficult to discuss it without spoiling anything, so I’ll simply say that it follows the memories of a lonely old man.

Puzzles consist of moving and aligning surfaces so that the Old Man can make his way across the scene. Clicking reveals a series of line segments, which indicate the path he can take. Some surfaces can be moved and others cannot, and once two surfaces are aligned, a dot appears to mark the intersection. You can instruct the Old Man to move by clicking, but he will refuse to move, a question mark above his head, if the path is not clear.

You are required to move in one direction, rearranging surfaces so that you can make your way across the scene until you find a resting place where the Old Man will put down his pack and reminisce--after which you have to click on an object in the scene that will trigger a memory. These memories tell the story of his past and they are absolutely gorgeous snapshots of a moment in time.

The atmosphere is where the game shines. Not only is the art nice to look at, the small details like swaying leaves, critters and people that go about their lives and passing vehicles breathe life into every scene, making the world a living, breathing—not to mention realistic—one. Ambient sounds like the trickle of water or even something as small as shuffling cards can be heard over the background music, which changes with each scene change.

There’s just something incredibly charming about the layers of detail and I found myself stopping on more than one occasion to see what I could click on and how it would respond. Your cursor can part or block the flow of water, startle birds shift power lines, and prompt creatures and people to move and change positions. Some objects prompt the Old Man to resume his journey, while others just provide a lovely little distraction.

And that sense of wonder will linger even after you’ve complete your playthrough, which will take you anywhere from 1 to 2 hours depending on how leisurely your journey is. I didn't find any bugs during my time spent in game and performance was good. No, there are no sound sliders, which is not unheard of in games that are released on mobile devices as well as Steam, or an exit button, but that is in no way game breaking. I'm a grown up, I can use windows or alt+tab and close out my games--no big deal.

The game is linear, moving along after you go from point A to point B. The latter half of the game adds on some interesting mechanics to the standard land mass shift, but I didn’t find any of the puzzles to be too difficult. Most can be solved after pausing to think, but the main focus of the game is the story.

The Old Man’s Journey is a fantastic, albeit short experience. It’s one of those games that you just have to play to understand its charm and if you’re a fan of poignant stories or atmospheric games, then you're in for a treat. I enjoyed every moment of this game and there were moments where I just had to smile because there was a clever puzzle or a triumphant moment after solving a puzzle.

An old man takes a trip across the world and revists some old memories along the way in this sad but also heartwarming tale.

Door to door this game is about 7 hours which is pretty good considering the price. It is quite a simple game so you are playing this not to be challenged but to casually take in the awesome sights and hear the wonderful music. You move around by moving the horizons of the pictures to get from one side to the other or from the bottom to the top. If you want a story with feels and some great art then this is a game you should try.

Old Man’s Journey is a visual narrative, and a 2D puzzle-adventure game, where an old man who receives a letter about some troubling news, and then you follow his journey to see what that letter is about. One of the games that I got from Humble Bundle some time ago, so might as well play it and see if it's good or not.

✔️ Good story: No dialogue is in the game and we don't hear anyone talk, but the story is told through flashbacks, the scenery and the old man himself during his journey. It’s a short emotional story with a bittersweet ending.
✔️ Simple gameplay: All you do is control the old man and lead him to his destination, while solving puzzles by interacting and shaping the landscape for him to traverse.
✔️ Beautiful graphics: The world, landscapes, flashbacks and animations are beautifully handcrafted and just pleasant to look at. Some of the artwork in there are breathtaking (it’s like looking at a painting).
✔️ Good soundtrack: The game has a calm and relaxing soundtrack that matches perfectly with the game’s artstyle and atmosphere.

❌ Puzzles are easy: It didn’t take much time for me to solve the puzzles, but the game advertises them as “pressure-free”, so it's understandable.


This is a short game that took me about 1.5 to complete, the story is sweet and kept me invested till the end. If you have some spare time then I suggest giving it a try.

Crim's Humble Opinion Curator

A fairly under rated indie puzzle game with a beautiful story and world. I sat down with my girlfriend and played this game and we were engrossed in the title during the short time we spent with it. Looking at other reviews it is longer if you stop and smell the roses per say and interact with every door and other interactable. The story follows an old man going on a journey. You're not really given much more than that. As you progress, the old man takes breaks at various points and reminisces his life. This is where you find out the rest of the story. It has a really strong narration that is only told through images. That's pretty hard to do in most cases but this game pulls it off really well.

Along with the beautiful visual and audio aesthetics the game is accompanied by a very intuitive and casual puzzle mechanic that I found to be fantastic. You manipulate hills, mountains, and other landscapes in the background or foreground to continue your journey. I didn't have any major cons. This game sat in my library for quite a while before I got around to it and I'm glad I did.

I highly recommend this one if you enjoy puzzles or narrative titles. At sale time it can be picked up pretty cheap and it's worth the time. You can invest more time in it as well by finding everything and really getting your moneys worth exploring the hand crafted artistic world.

The story is entirely visual, and progresses through a series of images that we see when the old man pauses in his journey to reflect on his life.

Gameplay:

Help the old man to proceed on his journey by manipulating the environment. The way this works is pretty straightforward: Raise and lower terrain so that it intersects, enabling him to hop between them. Ground that you are standing on cannot be moved, but you can see which hills can be adjusted by clicking and holding on any of them.

There is one place where you have to turn a crank using your mouse, but other than that, gameplay entirely consists of puzzling out how to get these intersections so that you can proceed. There is a sequence where you have to react semi-quickly with aligning the way forward, but it won't keep you from progressing if you can't do it; it will just slow you down a bit.

Sights and Sounds:

The music and sfx are nice, but the artwork is where this game really shines. It's vivid and beautiful, even during the darkest storm.

Verdict:

At the end of the day, this is a walking sim with some light puzzling. It is also a beautiful journey through this man's memories, both literally and figuratively. The scenery is absolutely a delight, and that alone makes the game worth playing. Recommended!

We were always taught to have respect for older people. I guess you have to become older as well to truly understand how great these people are, as they were managed to come through such a long life and experience a lot of different events. For me personally, Old Man's Journey is something like a very intimate story of the love, hope and constant neverending searching for yourself in this big world full of various people. After finishing this game, I really felt like I wanted to visit my grandparents and ask them to tell their stories.


In this game, we will experience the story of an old man who receives a mysterious letter. They don't show us what this letter is about so the player keeps on guessing about its topic till the end of the game. After receiving this letter, our hero immediately packs his stuff and hits the road. During his journey, he remembers the most significant moments of his life, some precious moments that usually stay in people’s hearts forever.


Old Man's Journey is represented as a typical point and click adventure, where you click on the place where you want to move your character. And the whole game is based on the puzzles where the player has to create the path for the old man to get to the final destination. The game manages to explain you its mechanics without a single word.

Basically, the player has to drag the terrain on the foreground to make it intersect with the background to make a perfect path for the old man to proceed. It's kinda interesting that the game never explains what this is all about and how the old man can manipulate with every kind of terrain to make a path for himself. Does he have any superpowers? Maybe there was a God's help with a magic touch from above? Or maybe the old man was really old enough and this was only his imagination? We don't know for sure and the game never gives you a proper answer for this, so you have to think about it yourself.

The game remains with the same idea till the very end and the only thing that changes is the puzzles that you have to solve. However, they are all stress-free and were designed to make you simply chill during your playthrough, so you can enjoy the story and experience the game to the fullest, instead of brainstorming another frustrating puzzle. In some scenes, you will walk by foot, then you will have to move the sheep herd to clear path for you and then you will catch a ride with a truck’s driver and help him create a perfect path - the variety of puzzles is pretty rich.

From time to time the game will show you the old man’s memories. It usually happens when he reaches a certain place and this place reminds him of something pleasant, of something really important in his life. These memories are presented as beautifully animated colorful postcards, you know, the one you send to your family and relatives wishing all the best when you are abroad and far away from them. I won’t lie to you, but I really almost shed a tear during some of these memories. This game does a perfect job delivering an emotional story of one man’s life through the old man’s journey.

Probably the strongest part of the game is the message that it delivers to the player. It tells a memorable story about a long life of one man, full of love, loss and neverending hope. However, it doesn’t mean that everyone will follow the story and see this game the same way. Some players will just rush through the game and won’t see any deep message, simply because people are different and we all perceive information in a different way.


Every single background looks astonishing and makes you want to hit that F12 button constantly. Most of the times, I felt like stopping from rushing through the game and just enjoy these picturesque sceneries. They are presented as stylized pastel paintings and look completely gorgeous. I also really enjoyed the animation in Old Man’s Journey, it may be not that smooth because of the game’s unique style, but in general, it looks great.


The soundtrack is pretty amazing and it perfectly works along with everything that you see on the screen. Nice melodic tunes of acoustic guitar, mixed with a flute and ambient sounds on the background fit the whole atmosphere of the game just great, giving you the right feel of the emotions you are dealing at the certain moments in the game.


Old Man’s Journey is a true masterpiece, the game that doesn’t try to impress you with something completely new or innovative, but it definitely brings you an amazingly emotional story with a hidden meaning. It’s that kind of a game that doesn’t require you to be a professional or experienced player, it was designed to be played by anyone, so you can truly enjoy and experience the story rather than trying to solve difficult puzzles. Highly recommended for every adventure genre lover.

This is one of the most challenging games I've played. Not because of the gameplay, but because of the main character's introspection that forced me to do some introspection and review of my own so-called life.

He remembers key moments from his youth that led him to where he is today. I was confronted with the fact that I have not lived a life. If I was to live to the age of this old man, I would be unable to stroke my white beard and recall fond moments from my youth. I have no fond memories. I did not experience any of the critical life milestones a man goes through, and I never will.

This is a pain I have borne for a very long time. It was a challenge to acknowledge my feelings, but not let them overwhelm me. I was successfully able to do this for an hour, and see the story of this old fool who threw his family away in favor of his personal ambitions.

I'm also playing Hob right now, so it wasn't jarring to be thrust into Old Man's Journey and the game explains nothing. Hob pulls the same stunt, but I figured out that game and anyone should be able to decipher OMJ, too. I was expecting a standard point and click adventure, but the traversal and terrain manipulation mechanics make OMJ more of a simple puzzle game.

I enjoyed figuring out how to create paths for the old man to make his momentous journey. It's such a bizarre type of puzzle, but it works really well. And big props to the programmer for allowing the old man to automatically find a path across multiple levels of terrain.

It's horrible to admit, but I can relate to the Old Man's Journey in ways I shouldn't be able to. For a very long time, I have felt as I imagine some old men do. Tired, weary, and ready for the end, yet hopeful for what lies beyond the mortal realm.

A masterpiece of beauty and emotions. The idea of moving the background to progress through the game is brilliant and the story touches the heart. Short duration but really intense. 10/10

The game with no dialogues and texts. I like this type. Also, it can be passed in less then 2 hours. It is a huge plus too.
You play as Old man. Wow. You got a letter and start your journey. There are 15 small levels. You see an 2d art after completing each level which shows you some of the Old man's past. So, when you reach the end, you will know his story.

So basically, you make actions to see the rest of the story. Main gameplay is nothing compared with visuals. So, if you play game only because of gameplay - skip this game. There is nothing great. Yeah, it contains an unique idea. You need to change height of "pieces of land" to make the way for the old man.

Be honest, I liked playing first hour of the game, but then the game forced me to think and make logical actions I left it and saw the rest of the story in YouTube.
Also, there were a couple of bugs when I was forced to replay level.

In overall, the game is good. It is a good way to spend 2 hours for some dollars.

Let me start by saying that the people who dislike this game have no soul.

So I thought this was a game about an older gamer just re-discovering their inner child and lost youth via a shiny new PC system.

But only to have those initial days/weeks of euphoria end in bittersweet fashion as eponymous Old Man realized that their hand-eye coordination did not and will never allow them to ever be as good at Call of Duty as their heart burns to be.

Old Man's Journey is delightful. I bought this indie title on a whim and played through the whole game with my wife’s boyfriend. It's gorgeous and the whole story was told without any words. We loved both how easy it was and how short it was.

Some of you "hardcore gamers" may not like easy and short, but that's really appealing to an old gamer like me. The whole experience is artful and sweet and heartbreaking. I recommend The Old Man's Journey with my highest praise.

10/10 for old boomers like me and you.
