Broken Sword 1 - Shadow of the Templars: Director's Cut

Broken Sword 1 - Shadow of the Templars: Director's Cut

Original vs Remastered?
I have never played the Broken Sword series but I am a huge fan of Monkey Island, Kings Quest, Space Quest, etc.

I am just curious that if i wanted to start this series would you reccomend the originals or the remade versions and why?

I'm not sure what versions I've played, probably the originals. The Directors Cut and Remastered versions got the best reviews though, so I'd play those versions.

I say original version of Shadow of the Templars, if you can find it. In the director's cut, blue circles have been added showing you where to click to advance the puzzle. For me this severely weakens the game, as a lot of the fun in the original game was in figuring out what to do with your inventory and your surroundings.

GOG.com has the directors cut that includes the original this weekend for $1.79. You can play both for less that 2 bucks. They also have 2 and 3 for the same price and 4 for $2.99.

The director's cut actually cuts content: it has less animations, less lines of dialogue and less puzzles. The new parts added are worse and do not fit with the rest of the game. And what it's worse: it cuts the most iconic part of the game: the voice over at the beginning with "Paris in the Fall".

Play the original, i've never seen a director's cut that made the game worse. I work as an animator and the animation is way inferior to the original. I couldn't bring myself to go much further into the game.

Think of it as being kind of like the Star Wars original trilogy special editions only they removed a hell of a lot more then they added.

They cut a heap of content (dialogue options and puzzles), removed the iconic opening voice over (even though they call back to it in the promotion for BS5), crammed in new scenes with Nico which seem awkward from a narrative point of view as they were never meant to be there in the first place, the difference in audio quality between old and new voice overs is VERY noticeable, added a terrible hint system so you don't even need to try to find an item (not "pixel hunting", full objects are highlighted now treating the player as if they're fools who need their hand held the whole time), the new portraits in the corners of the screen during dialogue sections look terrible and they also nerfed the game by taking away any chance of dying which in some cases means the game will simply switch to autopilot and solve a puzzle for you rather then letting you see a fail screen.

Even if you're a fan of Steam forget about buying it here and just get the game on GOG, even if you have it on Steam already I would STILL suggest buying it on GOG as outside of drumming up some sales to go towards the development of Broken Sword 5, the director's cut was just a horrible horrible mistake.

Original is so much better. The opening is epic, and the story telling was more fluid. The directors cut has changed a lot of the progression for the worse, and has removed a lot of the diffculty and also fun by spoon feeding a lot of the puzzles. I was very dissapointed with this version, and I played it until the very end. I would recommend the original any day over this downgraded version.

Original. Remastered looks too much like it was designed for handhelds.

The originals are so much better. In the DC, I find the character portraits highly distracting and overall the remake feels disjointed. I have decided to stop playing and hope that the originals will be added to Steam.

Original. The director's cut remove a lot of content from original game...

Director's Cut removes some content from the original game and adds some pointless new content that is quite shallow. Play the original.
