+ DSR did the 'Dark Fantasy' part alot better then DS3 did. Areas like the pitch black catacombs, the depths and blighttown have this horror feeling DS3 is lacking.
+ The Interconnected world design of DSR is great for explorers.
+ Atmosphere in generel
+ Poise
- Weapons in DSR cant keep up with DS3 move sets
- Enemy AI is obviously worse in DSR
- The upgrade system in DSR is really annoying
- Magic in DSR sucks (boring)
- Some items and spells are bound to a covenant and can only be used if you are in this covenant (red eye orb, sun light spear, etc.)
DSRvsDS:PtDE
+ DSR runs smooth in every area
+ Key binding available
+ magic (including all bosses and basic enemies which use it) looks alot better
+/- Armor doesnt look that shine anymore.
- Invaders can use estus. Same system like DS3. The estus uses are cut in half.
That being said: If you liked DS3, there is no good reason to not play DS1, even if it's only the Prepare to Die edition. It didn't "fail", because it still did what it was supposed to do. I would never miss out on a great gameplay experience, just because the game is rough around the edges.
EDIT: Nice.
Sunlight Spear can be used outside of the covenant after being obtained. Fairly certain of it.
You can use the lightning spears, but not the Sunlight spear you get from Gwyn soul, if you are not part of the Sunlight warriors.
