If you are going to get a new gfx card I'd suggest to buy a great one immediately, instead of advancing small steps every few months.
I recently bought 2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti's which run on SLI on my PC.
It was a big investment, but I'll be good for a while now. And in the long run it's most likely the cheaper solution, too!

I think that is the best thing to do. You could ofcourse make a small step forward now and be able to play Dota 2 on max graphics...but a few months later you'll get another game that you can't handle (at max settings) and you'll be spending another $150 - $200.

Try to bear with lower details for now and perform a big upgrade when possible :)

Just buy ONE fairly mid - high end card like a GTX 660 / TI , or go for a 7870 OC for a slightly cheaper option, but whatever you decide to get just buy ONE now, until your gpu starts to fall back in performance then think about SLI/Xfire when the card is MUCH cheaper in around 1-3 years time.
i spent 120 € on a complete computer and i can play DOTA 2 perfectly well i have the Geforce 260 GTX works fine for me

I use HD 7850 and all new games are working on max in 1080p, even for Planetside 2 is enough.
