How does "avoid player" work?
I marked a player to avoid and he was in my next game. I don't know about you but that's not "avoiding" to me.

It works like a charm. They will no longer appear on your team, but they could appear as an opponent.

When this feature was revealed, I predicted my win rate and MMR would skyrocket. So far I have been proven correct. In only two weeks, I am up nearly 500 points.

As far as I can tell, the only time I've seen the players I've avoided is on the enemy team.

It's hilarious that RPS is citing this thread from a player (OP) who has proudly bragged about having a behavior score of one out of 10,000.

They also cite that trashblog TheVerge, which conveniently doesn't even have comments or discussion on the articles because then people would be able to point out what a pile of garbage it is.

I've been matched with a player I avoided before and other users have reported being matched with players they have avoided, so either it is not a 100% guarantee or it does not 100% work as advertised, which is basically the same thing but is probably also why Valve has listed it as "experimental."

Jay Castello of RPS copying & pasting the same "ermagerds Volvo is forcing players to pay hurr durr!" as T.C. Sottek of TheVerge is melodramatic trash copying melodramatic trash and it's obvious that neither of them play Dota or have a basic understanding of how matchmaking works. Either that or they have an axe to grind and are intentionally and maliciously leaving out critical information about the matchmaking system for cheap clickbait.
I'm wondering if it didn't work because the person in question was out of reports, and tried to report for more than avoid player option; I tested and when I was out of reports but tried to put a report with avoid player (as an experiment), I still matched up with the player, but later when I put them to avoid, I never matched with them again, and have never matched again with a player I have put to simply avoid and nothing else.

I have been using it quite a bit (as you know in our mmr bracket how toxic people can be to others who make small mistakes,) and have been very pleased with it myself. RPS might not be the behemoth they once were, but they still have some influence in the gaming community as a whole.

There are 2 times you could click avoid and someone be on your team from my experience. 1) You do exactly what poster above said with coupling a report with an avoid and not having any reports left (and in turn nullifies the avoid). 2) You q and while in q, you then use the avoid button without leaving the q.

Otherwise, I haven't had a problem yet other than hoping for a way to remove avoids if I accidentally avoid someone after thinking about the game later or meaning to just report them and not actually avoid them.

It doesnt work, it does basically nothing at this point. You can mark people, but they still get in your team, since its in 'experimental' stage.

Positive thing is that they stated its in experimental stage on very start. Negative thing is, everything in Dota is in experimental stage from the first day.

im wondering if all these avoid player reports are showing a trend among players to valve.
is this an information gathering exercise?

Its better when you put out and update about every hero having Aghs, instead of fixing updates you yourself(Valve) said "not complete".

something ringing like a game performance update.
Valve is not adhering to problems with their single threaded - 64 bit engine.
it sucks. They refuse to fix it.

you have 0 reports left and are avoiding and trying to do a report at the same time, ONLY CLICK AVOID, AND REPORT. They CAN NOT be on your team after this.
