Preview Update 4 Wishlist
Hey guys, I've been meaning to make a more in-depth feedback video for Ion Maiden but unfortunately I've left it too long, so I wanted to post it in text format before the game is released. I don't expect anything drastic to be changed or added by release, it's just food for thought. Have fun reading, and thank you for making an awesome game!

Dave: Not taking into account the amount of levels, weapons, enemy variety or technical issues expected from an early access game, I believe Ion Maiden is shaping up to be a good game, good, but not great. It needs something new, something that we haven't seen done before in other build engine games. Shelly is all about bombs and explosives, my suggestion is more emphasis on destruction, possibly even crafting recipes for different explosives. I've left an asterisk next to features that I think could help make it stand out as a true classic.

note: Date indicates when last checked. Changes with strikes have been fixed, added or addressed.

Oh dear... "Brutal Ion Maiden"... ^^"
I don't know who it was, but it was in a video about "Strafe", where it was mentioned, that old school titles were bloody and gory for their time, but it was never like bloodfountains and dismemberment everywhere.

I also don't recall in-fighting in a build engine game.
It makes sense in Doom, since everything is basically a brainless zombie or a monster simply out for blood.
But in Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood, there was never such a thing... cause why?
And in Ion Maiden, the enemies have their target: You.
It would be weird if they suddenly fight each other.

And the C4-Idea sounds like a build-in sequence break.
Can be usefull... I think... but it would break each level so hard.

Oh yeah... why is Shelly more about bombs and explosives?
Cause the name "Bombshell"?
I mean... I love the bowling bombs, they add to the tradition that each build engine game had their own style of granades.
In "Red Faction 2", you play as the destruction expert of the group, but still have a normal shooter arsenal.

Weapon skins? Ok...
And be careful with "Weapon Upgrades" and "Character Upgrades".
It's hard to balance them, also, they can bring the action to a crawl (Shadow Warrior 2).
But the playable chars can be fun, like the one "Duke Nukem 3D" mod, where you can play as another char with kinda the same weapons but different behavior.

Night Vision goggles can be 2 things:
1. Useless
2. Annoying
They can be useless like in Duke (or non-funktional like in Blood) since you don't have much option to use them.
Or annoying, cause there are too many dark areas.
These areas are never really fun.
The goggles and silencer would be better in a more stealth focused game.
I've played Quake 2 around 20 minutes ago and found a silencer... which is a waste of inventory-space, cause such a thing has no use in an old school shooter.

And for the general changes:
A weapon shouldn't even be drawn when out of ammo and should not be available, since you have to use a weapon with ammo.
Picking up small items... for what?
I mean, it can be a neat little feature if you build in an all-killing uber soap, but I don't see much use in picking up an throwing stuff around.

Basically, what you wanna add is what you've seen in other shooters like Doom or Dusk, or from mods like Brutal Doom and Alien Armageddon.
So yeah: "It needs something new, something that we haven't seen done before in other build engine games."
But I have seen these things in many other games.

I'm not sure that I understand this thread at the moment. Is this a list of things that you wish would be added/implemented, or does this also contain a list of things have have been added? I'm just wondering as several descriptions are written in the past tense and sound as though they have been done, some lines also specifically say (ADDED), and what are the dates? Is that the date that you added a new item to your wish list, or the date that the desired change was implemented?

Yeah, since his post was edited long after it was made, "ADDED" just means he had more weird wishes.
I mean, there is no dismembermend in Ion Maiden.
It's basically an "Other games do that, so Ion Maiden should do these things to!"-thread.

Relatively speaking, I suppose. Just wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything new that I hadn't seen yet.

Ah, gotcha. Thx for the clarification.

It is just ddave's "wish" list though. They aren't all bad ideas, and he's just basically brainstorming out loud - Ain't nothing wrong with that.

Haha yeah, relatively to when he started this topic. :D
Even 1 day after would be a long time, when it comes to editing a post.

Yeah, it's ok to have a wishlist, but saying that this game would stand out if it would have thise things is something I can't agree with.
I mean... not every single thing needs to be like "Brutal Doom".
And most things are just little things that add nothing except a bit more details and gameplay changes.

But it would take the focus away from what the devs wanna make (I think): Another awesome game made with the build engine beneath "Shadow Warrior", "Duke Nukem 3D" and "Blood".
It's mostly for fans of these 3 titles and it does exactly what it wants.
And most of these wishes would drag the game away from that goal.

Right now, I even think that headshots are a bit much, cause in the other build engine titles, it was all about remembering how often you have to hit something, not where you have to hit it.
But this system still feels good and makes the Loverboy worthwhile for a long time.

Oh ya, I agree with you 100% that the game doesn't need any of these things in order to reach it's target, and it looks to me like it is still perfectly on target right now just the way it is - But I don't want to rain on anyone's parade for having their own wish list, for whatever reason, either.

Needless to say, I don't think we need to be concerned about the devs starting to add non-essential and/or meaningless features that would steer it away from what it is supposed to be. They know the original content of the classics, they have their goal, and they seem to have a pretty good handle on things.

All the same, I'm all for anyone voicing their concerns and wishes - While many recomendations wouldn't make the cut anyway, the odd suggestion might appear that might possibly be considered.

I agree about the headshots too. They don't really do anything for me personally, but I'm sure that there are many people that are very much into that sorta' thing.
dwtietz Nov 23, 2018 @ 12:03pm
My biggest wish is that they would just release more updates on a somewhat regular schedule. Or better yet, open up access to the 'unstable' betas that they're working on. But they already know that these are the things that I'm wishing for. :P

And I would really love, love, love to be able to checkout some of the earlier versions from 2015 and 2016... the older the better ;)

Too many cooks spoil the broth. The devs shouldn't listen to everybody. Well, listening to everybody is, fine, but so is ignoring the majority of suggestions. Design by committee is not a good thing. I'm talking in of course in general here, I'm not addressing ddave here. Probably obvious, because one player does not a committee make.

i think ddave did a good job of thinking of all sorts of little touches, i don't know if they should all be implimented but the thought put into them is very good :>)

Just a few comments related to Blood:
Blood has infighting, at least between zombies and cultists, not sure about other species.

Also, Blood doesn't have Night Vision, it has Beast Vision, which renders the enemies fullbright. It works, it's just kinda useless.

Well, the only "infight" I've noticed is when Zombies attack civillians, but I've never seen them attack cultists.
Maybe cause they are rarely in the same room...

I know that Blood has another form of "Night Vision", but the function is nearly the same: make enemies more visible.
The goggles in Duke Nukem don't really make the rooms brighter and also just highlight enemies.
