Found the solution to crash on startup !

[Xertic]

Right click helldivers 2 on steam library and click properties at the bottom of list
Go to "Controller" on left hand side second from the bottom
On the right side in controller options, change that to disable steam input

I tried all these different settings, and it instantly crashes on startup if it's set to anything other than the disable option.

As soon as I make it "disable steam input" it works!

Hope this fixes your startup crash issue!

Last night I had to start the game 5 times before it worked. Tried to start just now and got the same crash. Disabling steam input for controllers as you described and it started up just fine. Thanks for the recommendation, wasn't going to play with controller anyhow.

doesnt work and when it does you still crash walking out of the ship during tutorial

Game crashes immediately when you hit the OPTION button on a controller. 100% of the time it crahes. Crashes on startup for me even with this change. Cant make it passed walking out of the ship
