Yes, you apparently need an account to connect to the matchmaking server and for crossplay... but it's free and takes 2 mins, I just did it

No, PSN is not required to play on Steam. The game is cross-play and cross save with PS5. To use the cross-save feature obviously you need to have a PSN account, but not for just playing on Steam and utilizing cross-play with PS5 players.

And most of us probably remember a time when we were up in arms about having an xbox acccount on PC. Times change, as they always do, I imagine this will become a more common practice on sony's side going forward or at least I wouldn't put it past them.

Do I love having gazillion accounts to play different games? No.
Is that what the gaming industry wants to do? Yes.

I dont have a playstation and dont have a psn account and I am playing the game with randoms since it launched.
