EDIT: Language Translation Reference Sheet, read at your own peril, you will be spoiling yourself on the language and how it works, which was fun to figure out: https://i.imgur.com/JCHCl6u.png
When you get the shield, it says "A shield! Finally!". Lol.
Without this sheet I guarentee that I never would have figured that out myself as there's a page of the manual that kind of points it out but doesn't make it super obvious. I wish I had the patience to translate a lot of this text but it's so time consuming.
I've translated about 14 pages of the guide so far, including some super super dense pages like page 17. Lots of neat information here.
As for solving the language itself, my genuine tips would be to first understand the rules of the language. What patterns do the letters make, and what patterns do they never make? Then, look for repeated words and compare, try and find meanings for certain words. When I had maybe 15 words set in stone, I started to notice patterns that allowed me to realize the full scope of the language. A good early game word is "key". When you pick up and use the key, the word key appears in both places, so you can get the words for getting something, "key", and using something. I kept files in Paint Dot Net with every bit of text and guide page I found in the game and studied them well.
