Controller not working on Mac

Unsure if this'll help in any way but worth a shot.

Recently got a Macbook Pro (M1, 2021) and controller support for other games in my library (such as Celeste) has been working fine. However TUNIC doesn't seem to want to detect my PS4 controller which is connected via Bluetooth (wired also didn't work).

Along with this, I attempted to mess around with the controller preferences for the game and the controller settings in big picture mode, and was able to get the game to detect my button presses to skip the logos at the beginning...but as soon as I get to the menu screen, it won't let me move through the different options, or press anything.

I am so, so confused. If anyone else is having issues with controller support on Mac for TUNIC, and has figured out a fix, please let me know! :)

Well... I don't know what's going on there xD
If it stops at some point while you play that'll suggest some things to me, but now just glad it works and you can enjoy the game!

No, this is a very real description of the solution to my issue! It's bizarre and I can not even imagine how it works, but it did! I hope everyone else experiencing the same issue can find something analogous to do / the devs read this and it helps them diagnose the problem.

I am on macOS 12.3.1 (upgrading and noting that the release notes indicated some nebulous controller fixes is what moved me to make my comment yesterday).

Amazingly, your HollowKnight comment seems to have fixed things. I launched HollowKnight, having changed no settings anywhere in Steam, the OS, Tunic, etc., and the controller was correctly picked up in HollowKnight. Closing HK and launching Tunic, suddenly the controller works in the menu and gameplay! Amazing! Thank you!

From what you just described it sounds like it's actually a steam issue with the controller.

Are you using Big Picture mode in steam? Does your controller work in Big Picture mode before you try to launch Tunic? Does it stop working once you launch the game?
You should to a little testing with and without using Big Picture mode in steam.

From what you said launching Hollow Knight fixed it really sounds like your issue had to do with steam and the setup of your controller. Might not be Tunic related.

Having the same issue with the Stadia controller on Mac No matter what I do, bumpers and triggers kill all movement. Getting stuck in corners and edges temporarily kills movement.

When plugged in it's recognized as Generic Controller, but then Xbox controller also pops up. Please Advise!

If you have Configuration Support enabled, disable it then see how it goes (Steam > Preferences > Controller > General Controller Settings).

I had some problems with my Xbox One controller.
The solution that works for me is to have the controller disconnected,
Open steam and go to the controller options, connect the controller, sometimes it list two or more controllers (1 xbox one, 1 to many xbox 360 controllers).
If the list contains more controllers then connected disconnect the controller and reconnect it. repeat until only the xbox one controller shows.
For me I often have to reconnect the controller once to make it work.

This makes me think it's a Steam problem with the controllers and not the game it self

Some of the issues faced stem from Steam-side, but there are some that will stem from the game (well InControl and how it works by default unless the devs do something about it...)

A note to everyone - update firmware on your xbox controller. This fixed the issue on MacOS for me.

It's 2025 and I'm still having the same issue: able to get the game to detect my button presses to skip the logos but doesn't work once entered the game menu.
Can anyone help?
