Pistol Takedown

Can someone explain to me how to do a pistol takedown. When I creep up behind one of the cult goons who is standing there near another goon, I have a pistol in my hand and I get the Takedown option come up on screen so I hit X on my controller to do the takedown and then pull the right trigger as prompted but my guy always throws his melee weapon at the second rather than using the pistol.

What am I doing wrong?

First off you must have either a Pistol or single handed SMG in your off hand slot.

While taking down an enemy you hold down aim button (default: RMB) and press fire multiple times while panning camera in the direction of other enemies near initial takedown (do not release the aim button).

In addition to the prev comment, u also shouldn't have any meelee weapons in your inventory (otherwise deputy will throw it instead of using a pistol) and have a requiered perk opened.

Playing with a mouse (like a normal human being) holding (?) takedown and holding right button you get into pistol takedown, and fire with the left. only left button is a melee weapon throw. No idea how it is with a pad (outside of the horrible planes)

Melee takedown:
[while doing a normal takedown] -> press fire

Sidearm takedown:
[while doing a normal takedown] -> hold aim -> press fire (can be pressed multiple times to fire at multiple enemies)

I use controller (I guess you do too), so for us, a sidearm takedown would be "hold L2 -> press R2" (or whatever you have aim and fire mapped to) whereas a melee takedown would just be "Press R2". I've also found that if you hold L2 at the very beginning of the initial takedown, the game won't read it. In other words, you can hold L2 too soon and the game will just give you a melee takedown, so try to delay it slightly until you get a better feel for it. That completely threw off my timing when first playing FC5, since I was used to the timing of FC4. Hopefully that helps.

You can do a pistol takedown with any handgun slot including the grenade launcher. I use KB/M but I don't think that makes me a normal human being (I wish something could do that). I mostly use it because my controller drifts when I aim down sights.

My Xbox controller used to drift. This video totally fixed that for me. It is a quick and easy fix that does not require technical skills to fix.
