Is this game overrated?

I got it based on high review ratings and have been playing the single player mode a bit just get get the hang of it. So far just the first two SP games, "Dead Center" the one immediately after. Those two are nearly identical and in the last segment of each, you just get mobbed with increasing hordes of infected and special infected as you try to gather the required number of gasoline cans. It's mindless madness filled with unpleasant noises and subpar graphics.

So my basic question is... are those two segments that I've tried so far representative of what this game is like throughout?

This game will quickly not seem overrated if you play online with other people. Single player has silly ai team mates, but real people make this far more interesting. There is a great deal of strategy you can use with real people that is not possible in single player.

Just make sure to ignore any jerks, people tend to be hard on new players in this game for no real good reason, and generally the jerks do not give the best advice.

Its 1 of the best co op games ever and will have 1 of the most suprisingly deep mulitplayer experiences you can find in a 1st person shooter if you play long enough. Just got to play with other ppl.

this games got great replay value, I love it and its definetely not overrated.

Yea, I'm not giving up on it just yet. I tried a third one in the SP mode where you go thru the amusement part. I'm kinda liking that one. First time thru, I got killed at the roller coaster for lack of knowing where the heck to go after starting the coaster up.

I'll have to give coop a try, I bought the game on the basis of its rating as a coop. I think I've dinked around with SP long enough to give it a go. Do most coop players use mics in this game?

Ah, I know how you feel.
When I started playing L4D 1, I almost immediatelly fell in love with it.
With L4D 2, things were different.
I was really frustrated by the first map, too. I was constantly getting lost in that stupid Mall and the gas cans finale? Infuriating. Luckily, I have a good friend whom I can play with, so he helped me and as I kept playing, I started to really like this game

So just hang in there and when you get into it, try joining some multiplayer maps and you'll see for yourself
