Hi guys, i need help D: my left 4 dead 2 is crashed.
A few days ago I installed a cfg called autoexec.cfg, the problem is that when you start the game I get the presentation, then loads and that's all good, but in the start menu after 3 seconds the game freezes.
I tried deleting the cfg and everything, repair files with steeamm and reinstalling the game and still closes.

A steam client update most likely screwed up. You can set steam to offline mode and it may work, but you'll be stuck playing single player.

I can not play with my friends? D:

Unfortunately that's all I know.

BananaSilver, make sure you still have the config_default.cfg

A common directory where you might find this file is here.
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg

Have you verified the integrity of your game cache? this usually fixes things. To do this you need to have steam open. Right click on the Steam icon Choose Library

When the library loads you will see your games.
Locate Left 4 Dead 2.
Right Click on it and choose Properties.
A window will open. Go to the Local Files Tab.
Click on Verifty Integrity of Game Cache, and allow it to scan.
This can take several minutes depending on your system and net connection so be patient. If it finds it had to replace some files allow it to replace them. Restart steam and your game, and see if it crashes.

If you do NOT have original default CFG file the game intergrity scan should put it back for you.

Also, have you used the Steam Workshop to download any addons? Have you went to any websites other than Steam Workshop to download addons/campaigns? If you have and IF you can get to your addons section while in the game dashboard, and see all of your addons, just uncheck them all. Close your game, Close Steam. Start Steam, Start the game. If it did not crash then it is likely a addon is causing some issues. Put them back one at a time and restart your game. I know the addons section will tell you if there is a conflicting addon, but it always doesn't catch the conflicts from addons you picked up from outside of steam workshop.

Another option is to re-install Steam. You can search the Steam forums on those steps.

If you still have no luck you can post in the steam support forum or contact steam for direct support. The other way to fix it is to visit your steam library, and delete all the local content files for your Left 4 Dead 2 (it will uninstall left 4 dead 2) You then return to your Library to install (re-download) the game.

If a re-install doesn't work then it could be an issue with your system hardware/software. If you're using Windows 7, you might find some hints as to why this is happening by using your Event Viewer Tool in Windows. Here is the directory path in Windows to find the tool.

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools and choose Event Viewer. Allow it to load (it takes a few moments to load the list). If you see all kinds of errors/critical errors in this area do NOT panic. Do not try to fix anything. Just use this area as to find timestamps of when you had the last crash with your system/software and see if it offers hints as to why it happens. Again, this is if you have an issue with the hardware or software.

Good Luck :)

I'm having the same type of issue, but can even play in offline mode. I've verified files multiple times, reinstalled L4D2 three times and reinstalled Steam once. Nothing seems to work since the Steam client update.

I would put in a support ticket, but make sure you let them know what you've already tried. They are very busy so you may not get a reply back today.

The first time this happened to me, I put in a support ticket and it took them 3 days to reply which they wanted to sent me to Valve support and they sent me back to Steam support lol. But at this point, the problem had already been fixed. I sent in another support ticket this time around, two days ago.. no reply yet.

Do you get any errors at all? Did you check your computer logs to see if anything is showing issues with hardware (video/audio)? What exactly happens?
zombieslayer Jul 11, 2013 @ 11:40am
i have checked no error reports nothing just freezes but can play in offline mode with no problems this sucks they better get this fixed soon!
