Get your friends to download the map. That's step one.
Step two, make sure the map you want fits the game mode. (Survival for survival maps, Campaign for campaigns, some don't work in the other game mode.)
Step 3, create a lobby. Public, friends-only, it doesn't quite matter.
Step 4, choose Best Available Dedicated servers. Most addon maps are not supported by Official Dedicated servers.
Step 5, sort out your survivors and all that jazz.
Step 6, play.
Step 7, profit.
Step 8, repeat.

It doesn't work. Let me guess: it's trying to find a server which has my map installed and finds none. Well what are the odds of that? Can't I just "be" the server?

Which part doesn't work? The part where your friends can't join the lobby or server?
If friends can't join in but you can make a lobby for the campaign, means your friends screw up, something with installing or other things. Or let your friend make the lobby and see if you can join.
If the server is the problem... well ya, best dedicated is not a good choice for custom maps, go official or host it yourself or a friend who has a better connection.

Oh, and check if the addon is enabled inside the game.

You'll proabbly not find one already hosted, host your own lobby on a best dedicated or local server.

Try local server, if ur pc and connection is good.
Works for me I have 25k.

If there are no Best available Dedicated servers, try editing the game options so it plays a Local Server. This means that you will essentially be the server, things like latency and certain mods may get a bit messy. But so long as your friends have the map, they should be able to join.

If it's local I still can't join my friend it keeps saying "Connection failed after 10 retries" I also tried using hamachi.

The solution is play in local server and wait for the video of the map to be ended, once the cinematic is over your friends can play with you, i don't know why there is this bug but that's how it is
