for some reason, lots of textures are only loading as red error signs. also, i cant get a resolution that matches my screen

The errors can be fixed by verifying your game caches:
rightclick in Steam on L4D2->properties->local files->verify game caches

I think it is a normal resolution. I know that in options there is a setting you can change from 4:3 to 16:9, maybe you changed it.
