Crashing to desktop when trying to import a spray

I've scoured google trying to find a fix for this. Out of no where, l4d2 started crashing to the desktop when trying to import a custom spray. From the main menu, I go to options > multiplayer > import custom spray and as soon as it's selected, boom - crash to desktop.

Anyone else have this issue, and what is the GD fix already?

Try verify the game cache files.

Did that.

Try converting the jpeg or png file to a tga (targa) file. Works every time and no problem.

Well, my entire spray collection is .tga, but file format is not moot. The file browser in-game doesn't even load - the game crashes the moment I click on import suggesting the call to the file browser is what's causing the whole engine to panic and crash. I've even tried removing some files critical for the engine to work, verifying the cache to replace them from Valve's servers. The result is always the same, crash on click.

Either I'm missing something and this is going to require a support ticket with Valve directly, or something is broke on Valve's end and they're handing out client versions with broken elements. I'm not sure either way because I haven't been using sprays much lately and that makes it hard to establish a timeline on when the problem started. Without a timeline, you can't be certain if the break corresponds to a specific patch or not.

So yeah, that's where I'm at but I can see from only having 2 responses in 4 hours both suggesting tier 1 troubleshooting isolation this is not a bigger issue.

*sigh* ...I just hate dealing with software tech support when things are this cut-and-dry. Hopefully they have some sort of SLA I can use as leverage if the ticket doesn't move anywhere. Sure, I'm no software specialist but I do work with routing engines with similar logic. Code is code, configurations are fallible.

Thanks for the effort though, guys.
