I would try verifying your local cache through Steam.
I was always the host, and his connection was very often faulty ( not uncommon for mine to have hiccups, as well ), so I reckon it might've been, at least partially, linked to that.
As Chibbity said, definitely verify your files, though.
There have been a number of posts about that over the years, but, overall, it seems pretty rare. Personally, I've done thousands of missions, and I've seen that maybe 2 or 3 times, and it's been a long time (maybe a couple of years) since the last time. I don't know what caused it, but I was playing with others and I wasn't the only one affected, so a desync issue seems like a good guess, but that presumably wouldn't apply if you're playing solo.
$300 laptop? Does it have problems running the game? If so, maybe the game is just having problems keeping up with everything when things get busy, like the spawns on extraction, and the collision detection fails.
