MK or MvC style move/combo input?
Been tossing up whether or not to pick this game up on the consoles (can't play it on PC anyway and don't really want to). Unfortunately, I'm particular about my fighting games given I utterly despise any control scheme like Skullgirls and Marvel versus Capcom. I like the simplicity of Mortal Kombat's (9-11) controls.

Would be a big help to know which games control style Soulcalibur VI uses or is closest to.

I've never played Skullgirls or Marvel versus Capcom, so I don't know what you are talking about.
In SC6 there are 3 basic attack buttons (vertical weapon attack, horisontal weapon attack, unarmed attack), a dedicated block button and button combinations.

Whoops, meant to ask how the input for combos and special moves and what not were done. Dunno where my head was at when I wrote this. Hopefully the change in title will convey my question better.

SC combos are short, in general there are very little complicated inputs in the game (and those that are present are exclusive to a handful of characters). Super moves can be bind to one button.
I would say more like tekken? A handful of characters have a 'quarter circle' motion move but no, controls are not like MvC or Street fighter. As above, there's horiz, vert, and kicks, combined with /how/ you move (standing still, running to the side, tapping back, etc) determines the move.

You'll see notations like 66B, mapped out like a keypad (doubletap foward + B) or 2A (tap down and A) on forums and sites.

It depends on the charracter, generally you have simple inputs like direction+ button, but some charrs have MK special moves style quater circles, with occasionall back-forward + button.
What rather unusuall is that Sc has slide inputs. That means you input a button right after an another, this resembles MK speciall cancells only you do it faster, before the moves animation propperly starts. The inputs as a whole are verry simple, the hard stuff is more about timing and doing stuff like ducking and standing up with a WR move as fast as possible, not verry demanding in the inputs department... more timing wise. There is an exception in the form of haohmaru... He has all that but he also has a lot of SamSho style inputs and speciall cancells but thats just one charracter and even then he doesn't have that manny.

A friend whose been nagging me to play it bought it for me. Having spent six hours or so trying it out, I've got my answer. I don't like this game. Can't get a flow going and don't like the inputs (Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 flashbacks). If I keep playing I'll probably improve but I'm not going to waste my time.

Thank you all for your answers.

Amuse my curiosity, why you don't like it?

I already gave my reasons. Whether or not they're good enough for you isn't up to me.

Basically they have issues with games that require patience and strategy aside shooters.
They think a good fighting game is based on whooping online by auto combos + extreme cheese tactics like in massive kill count beatem'ups like dynasty warriors, where you mash & occasionally block; or just mash depending on lazy difficulty.
I don't play (fighting games) online. I honestly just hate the type of combat controls it uses.

you can change the controls, its a fighting game where you step duck and strike while moving.
its not as simple as expecting an AI army to do the work for you.
Yes, I've been told I can do that but it doesn't change much of anything for me. It's just not my kind of fighting game. That's my loss.

You have very nice friend. Maybe your friend thought your handle name will good fit with SoulCalibur.

Even you don't play as fighting game, you can make some custom character.

As the saying in Warframe goes "Fashion is the real endgame".

oh god this is so true

anyway it's not that you don't like this fighting game, it's more like you don't like any fighting game, you like easy games with easy learning curves
SC6 is really a beginner friendly fighting game imo, beside a few characters you don't have the need for crazy inputs, it's more about tactics and knowledge than inputting unlike other fighting game
I think there's no fighting game with easier inputs than this one, and I'm truly bad at inputting, yet I can somewhat play decently

You aren't wrong about my preferences (though I disagree with the notion that I dislike fighting games). With my experiences with SC6 thus far I've found that I get by with the basic stuff and randomly pull off some of the cooler moves. It's more I'm seeing what does what with no commitment to memory. Can't read any of the inputs without a chart in the combo menu (something I really don't like in these types of game, Mortal Kombat at least tells you what buttons to press, not this G, K, B, etc stuff) save for what direction to move.

There's a lot of me problems at play here as well, often I'm trying to be faster than the computer in fights, which often leads to mashing Y and X (Xbox controller) to get a word in edge ways. I'm no good at thinking on the fly and attacking strategically when I'm being smacked around. far as knowledge goes, The friend I mentioned a while back has been sending me video after video.

Having spent a little more time playing SC 6, despite my earlier opinions, I've come to like the game, enough so to purchase Soulcalibur and Soulcalibur 2 (the latter being more or less a test of patience, especially in the Sword Master mode). I will always hate the combat no matter how much I might enjoy the game. Can't pull of even half of the inputs to save my life, but considering my online interactions are exclusive to that friend of mine, it doesn't matter.
