How is the single player?

It's the usual sp you would expect: a campaign, the management aspect between battles, and skirmish mode.

How detailed are the management aspects? Tech tree, economy / political management. Does it have a significant effect on the combat missions, or just window dressing? :)

Well, i am not that far in, just played 3 missions. But from what i see is that you have tech trees to build new and better ships, can manage fleets, have to send them to different colonies to protect them so you won´t lose them by either attacks or distrust and so on... So all you mention is there, to an extend...

But as i said, i can´t really say much yet

The game is very much about the battles. The campaign layer keeps it varied an interesting but its aim is to create interesting battles rather than be a completely playable game on its own. If the battles don't interest you i don't think you'll like this game.
