how to open/close doors?

i just started playing the game and am in the house it starts you in a got to the quest where it wants me to go outside and cut down a tree but cant figure out how to open the door,i hit e to interact with it but the door not opening? how do i open and close the doors in this game? thanks

I had the same issue. It seems to be working now.

Look at the door handle (not the center of the door) then press E - works every time
